A system and method for controlling intake air flow of an internal combustion engine wherein the response of intake manifold pressure to changes in throttle valve position is controlled in accordance with an engine operating parameter and the gear position of an engine transmission, whereby jerk during acceleration or deceleration can be minimized and engine drivability can be harmonized with engine responsiveness.

A method and apparatus for the control of the air-fuel ratio of a mixture to an internal combustion engine. A value of fuel-delivery requirement for the engine is determined based upon engine load. An engine crankshaft position at which the pressure in each cylinder is at maximum is detected during each data sampling cycle. The determined fuel-delivery requirement value is modified based upon the detected engine crankshaft position.

Air-fuel ratio control system

A throttle valve has or cooperates with a metering wall or walls which function to limit the amount of air permitted to flow past the edge of the throttle valve when it is initially moved from its closed position. The amount of rotation of the throttle valve for a given change of air flow is thus increased enabling the output of a sensor such as a variable resistor to vary sufficiently to enable an accurate indication of the amount of air passing to the engine especially at frequently used relatively low throttle settings.

Air flow detection arrangement

The occurrence times of discharges of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle having a transmission and sources for deriving signals indicative of: (a) the engine being cranked or operating normally, (b) the transmission being in high or low gear, (c) engine speed, and (d) the values of parameters determining engine load are controlled by a computer responsive to the signals. The computer includes a read only memory having tables for storing signals with values indicative of spark advance and dwell angle as functions of engine load and engine speed for the engine being cranked, operating normally, the transmission being in high and low gear. The computer responds to the signals of the sources for selecting from the tables stored signals having values indicative of spark advance and dwell angle corresponding with the conditions indicated by signals (a), (b), (c) and (d). A spark control circuit responds to the signals having values indicative of spark advance and dwell angle to control the occurrence times of sparking for each cylinder of the engine. The same type of computer is susceptible to use for vehicles having different spark advance and dwell angle characteristics as functions of engine speed and engine load. The tables are for plural vehicle types having the different characteristics. Switches selectively enable signals of the tables associated with only one of the vehicle types to be coupled to the computer.

Spark timing control system for internal combustion engine

A fuel supply control system for use in an internal combustion engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system is disclosed which determines an amount of fuel supplied to the engine in accordance with intake air flow derived from engine suction vacuum and engine speed and corrected in accordance with exhaust gas recirculation flow. The engine suction vacuum and exhaust gas recirculation flow measurements are made in accordance with pressure measured at suitable points by semiconductor pressure sensors.

Fuel supply control system

To effect EGR in an internal combustion engine with the maintenance of adequate balance between the suppression of NO.sub.x formation and preservation of stable engine operation, the condition of combustion in the engine is taken as the basis of feedback control of the volume of recirculated exhaust gas so as to correct a deviation of the total amount of the recirculated exhaust gas and unexhausted combustion gas in the combustion chamber from a desired amount. The intensity of an ionic current produced upon combustion in each combustion chamber, the magnitude of mechanical vibration of the engine or the frequency of misfire in a combustion chamber is detected as an exact indication of the condition of combustion.

Feedback control of exhaust gas recirculation based on combustion

An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control system for an internal combustion engine, in which an EGR control valve including a vacuum-operated actuator governs the flow of recirculated exhaust gas according to the admission of air into the engine. To accomplish the control with high precision, the control system includes a flow sensor which provides an electrical signal representing the volume flow rate of air in the induction passage and a control circuit for controlling the magnitude of vacuum for the EGR valve through the operation of an electromagnetic valve based on the signal from the flow sensor. Optionally the control system has another flow sensor which provides an electrical signal representing the volume flow rate of recirculated exhaust gas to the control circuit to accomplish a feedback control.

Exhaust gas recirculation control system

An exhaust gas recirculation control system for an internal combustion engine, in which a feedback signal representing the amount of actually recirculated exhaust gas is produced by detecting the concentration of either CO.sub.2 or H.sub.2 O, which is contained in the exhaust gas in a nearly constant concentration, in combustible gas mixture diluted with recirculated exhaust gas.

In a spark-ignited internal combustion engine having a plurality of combustion chambers, at least one combustion chamber is intentionally caused to misfire either periodically or continuously to increase the amount of unburned fuel in the exhaust gas when the temperature in the thermal reactor drops excessively during, e.g., idling of the engine. An ignition system for performing the method has a supplementary ignition primary circuit which is normally disconnected from the ignition coil primary, but causes the secondary voltage either to become zero periodically or to lower when connected with the ignition coil primary. Alternatively, the ignition timing is retarded from a normal timing in a portion of the combustion chambers to raise the exhaust gas temperature. An ignition system for the ignition timing retardation has a supplementary circuit which prevents certain times of the breaks in the primary circuit from producing sparks in the intended combustion chambers and supplies a high voltage pulse to each of these combustion chambers with a predetermined time delay from each of the breaks which are made ineffectual.

The recirculation rate estimation means comprises three temperature sensors to respectively measure temperatures of intaken air, recycled exhaust gas and resulting mixture, and an analog computing unit to produce a signal representing an actual recirculation rate based on the temperature data and predeterminate specific heat values of the respective gases.

An apparatus for controlling spark advance in an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle, characterized by a circuit arrangement which is operative to detect the angular speed of rotation of the engine output shaft in a digital fashion and produce digital signals responsive to changes in preselected operating conditions such as engine output speed and intake manifold vacuum for controlling the spark advance in accordance with predetermined schedules. The spark advance is thus controlled without being affected by negligible or incidental transient fluctuations in the operating conditions of the engine and the advance characteristics can be readily altered by varying the schedules on which the digital signals are produced.
