A cordierite-based sintered body according to the present invention contains cordierite as a main component and silicon nitride or silicon carbide. The cordierite-based sintered body preferably has a thermal expansion coefficient less than 2.4 ppm/&#xb0; C. at 40&#xb0; C. to 400&#xb0; C., an open porosity of 0.5% or less, and an average grain size of 1 &#x3bc;m or less.

A heat exchanger element includes at least two honeycomb structures arranged serially and each including a cell structural portion having cells separated and formed by partition walls containing SiC and functioning as passages which extend from one end face to the other end face and which a first fluid passes through, and an outer peripheral wall disposed on the outer periphery of the cell structural portion. The first fluid passes through the cells of the honeycomb structures without leaking out of the cells or mixing. The cell structural portions of at least a pair of the honeycomb structures adjacent to each other among the honeycomb structures arranged serially are disposed with a gap, and the first fluid passing through the cells mixes together between end faces forming the gap.

A mullite-containing sintered body according to the present invention contains mullite and at least one selected from the group consisting of silicon nitride, silicon oxynitride, and sialon. It is preferable that the mullite-containing sintered body have a thermal expansion coefficient of less than 4.3 ppm/&#xb0; C. at 40&#xb0; C. to 400&#xb0; C., an open porosity of 0.5% or less, and an average grain size of 1.5 &#x3bc;m or less.

There is provided a heat exchanger realizing downsizing, weight saving, and cost reduction in comparison with a conventional heat exchange element or heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is provided with a first fluid flow portion formed of a honeycomb structure having a plurality of cells partitioned by ceramic partition walls and extending from one end face to another end face in an axial direction to allow a heating medium as a first fluid to flow therein, and a second fluid flow portion formed of a casing containing the honeycomb structure therein, the casing having an inlet and an outlet for a second fluid, and the second fluid flowing on an outer peripheral face of the honeycomb structure to receive heat from the first fluid.

The amount of flexure is a sum of a distance from a regression line to an upper side maximum displacement point and a distance from the regression line to a lower side maximum displacement point when calculating the regression line representing the relation of the position X in the longitudinal direction of the element and the displacement Y in a thickness direction from a plurality of data sets showing the relation of position X and displacement Y.

Sensor element and gas sensor

A gas sensor contains a sensor element for detecting the concentration of a particular gas component in a measurement gas and a housing for supporting the sensor element inside, and the sensor element has a rectangular solid structure of a solid electrolyte body containing a ceramic material. In the gas sensor, four edges of the solid electrolyte body are beveled over the entire length thereof to form eleventh to fourteenth chamfered portions corresponding to the four edges.

A solid electrolyte body is placed on and fixed to an upper plate of a press jig such that a major surface (an upper surface) of the solid electrolyte body faces one major surface of a guide plate having an open space. The upper plate is rotated by a transfer mechanism to incline the solid electrolyte body in one direction, and the inclined solid electrolyte body is moved toward the other major surface of the guide plate such that a first edge of the solid electrolyte body protrudes from the open space. Then, a cutter is slid along the other major surface, so that the first edge is chamfered to form a first chamfered portion.

A NOx-decomposing electrode is provided having a certain or a high NOx-decomposing/reducing ability, which is formed on a third solid electrolyte layer for decomposing a NOx to produce oxygen. The detecting electrode contains a noble metal Pt, a material ZrOof the third solid electrolyte layer, and a mixture containing silica (SiO) and alumina (AlO). Specifically, the detecting electrode contains 80% to 90% by weight of the Pt, 9.5% to 19.8% by weight of the ZrO, and 0.2% to 0.5% by weight of the mixture containing silica and alumina.

NOx-decomposing electrode and method for producing NOx sensor

A protective guard for a combustion appliance is disclosed which comprises a front frame having a pair of vertical frame portions between which a protective guard body is provided; a pair of side frames which at one end are rotatably supported on the vertical frame portions of said front frame on both ends thereof; and a cross beam member on both ends thereof slidably engaging the side frames. When the cross beam member is positioned at the upper ends of the side frames, the side frames are so rotatable about the axes of the upper ends of the vertical frame portions of the front frame that the side frames are able to be inwardly folded, and when the cross beam member is positioned at the lower ends of the side frames, the side frames are so fixed in an unfolded manner that they cannot be rotated. Thus, it will be noted that the protective guard can be fixed so that it can surround a combustion appliance in a stable manner.
