In a weft insertion system of an air jet loom, a weft passage in the form of a U-shaped groove opening forwardly toward a cloth fell is formed by recesses of profiled reed dents, and sub-nozzles are arranged to direct auxiliary air jets into the weft passage. In order to obtain a desirable air stream in the weft passage, and to prevent a weft yarn from flying out of the passage, an upper edge of each recess, bordering the recess on the upper side, is inclined so that a distance from an axis of swing motion of the reed becomes gradually smaller toward the open end of the recess. Furthermore, an innermost edge of each recess is inclined so as to intersect at an angle with a straight line passing through the axis of swing motion.

A tack-in selvage forming apparatus for tacking in the end portion of a picked weft yarn to form a selvage structure in weaving a towel. The tack-in selvage forming apapratus is comprised of a tack-in needle which is controllably driven by a driving mechanism including a cylindrical grooved cam rotatable in timed relation to a main shaft of a loom. The grooved cam is formed at its periphery with generally annular shallow and deep cam grooves. The shallow cam groove is parallel with a plane perpendicular to the axis of the grooved cam, while the deep cam groove is curved relative to the same plane. A part of the shallow cam groove and a part of the deep cam groove is common and the same in depth. The shallow cam groove has a profile corresponding to a resting state of the tack-in needle, while the deep cam groove has a profile corresponding to a tack-in operational state of the tack-in needle. A cam follower drivingly connected to the tack-in needle is selectively put into the shallow and deep cam grooves. Thus, the tack-in needle is rested when the cam follower is in the shallow cam groove and operated to accomplish tack-in of a weft yarn end portion when the cam follower is in the deep cam groove.

Tack-in selvage forming apparatus

An auxiliary nozzle for an air jet loom, arranged to provide assisting force to a weft yarn picked from a weft inserting nozzle. The auxiliary nozzle is formed with a nozzle opening through which auxiliary air is ejected to enhance the air stream from the weft inserting nozzle. The nozzle opening consists of two lateral opening sections which are spaced and parallel with each other, and an axial opening section connecting the two lateral opening sections with each other. Each lateral opening section extends generally perpendicular to a plane passing through the axis of the auxiliary nozzle. The axial opening section extends generally parallel with the above-mentioned plane. Thus, the nozzle opening is generally H-shaped and extends in the direction of the thickness of the nozzle body of the auxiliary nozzle, thereby stabilizing direction of the auxiliary air ejection from the auxiliary nozzle without being affected by a variation of the air pressure to be supplied to the auxiliary nozzle.
