In an authentication device, a controller executes login when a user name and a password are entered through an operation device and the entered password is identical to one of a plurality of fixed passwords previously stored in association with the entered user name on an HDD. When the entered password is identical to none of the plurality of fixed passwords and any one of the plurality of fixed passwords satisfies a predetermined condition on similarity to the entered password, the controller inhibits an authentication based on the fixed password satisfying the predetermined condition from being made for a predetermined period.

An electronic device is disclosed in which parameters or functions thereof can be executed with fewer key operations. An electronic device such as a facsimile device has a display unit that displays a plurality of keys that can be respectively used to specify and select the parameters or functions thereof, and will determine whether the length of time that each of the plurality of keys is pushed is long or short. If a key is pushed for a short period of time, that key will simply be selected, and if a key is pushed for a long period of time, that key will be selected and facsimile transmission will automatically begin.

Novel compound semiconductors are of the general formula, X.sub.5 YZ.sub.4, wherein X is a member selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ag and mixtures thereof, Y is a member selected from the group consisting of Al Ga, Tl and mixtures thereof, and Z is a member selected from the group consisting of Se, S, Te and mixtures thereof. Typical of the compound semiconductors are Cu.sub.5 AlSe.sub.4 and Ag.sub.5 AlSe.sub.4. These compound semiconductors are especially useful for making blue to UV light-emitting devices which include n-type and p-type compound semiconductor layers made of the above compound semiconductors.

Novel compound semiconductors are of the general formula, X.sub.5 YZ.sub.4, wherein X is a member selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ag and mixtures thereof, Y is a member selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga, Tl and mixtures thereof, and Z is a member selected from the group consisting of Se, S, Te and mixtures thereof. Typical of the compound semiconductors are Cu.sub.5 AlSe.sub.4 and Ag.sub.4 AlSe.sub.4. These compound semiconductors are especially useful for making blue to UV light-emitting devices which include n-type and p-type compound semiconductor layers made of the above compound semiconductors.

A light emission diode comprises a semiconductor substrate and a pn junction structure including an n-type ZnS compound semiconductor layer and a p-type ZnS compound semiconductor layer, Al being present in at least one of the semiconductor layers. By this, the diode is able to emit blue light at a high luminous intensity.

A semiconductor light-emitting device, such as LEDs AND laser diodes having emission wavelengths in a range which includes the blue to ultra-violet region of the spectrum are disclosed. The LED comprises a substrate and an p-n junction structure formed on the substrate, the p-n junction structure having first and second semiconductor layers, each consisting essentially of (Cu.sub.a Ag.sub.1-a)(Al.sub.b Ga.sub.1-b)(Se.sub.o S.sub.1-o).sub.2, wherein 0.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.1, 0.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.1, and 0.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.1, the first semiconductor layer being doped with N, P, or As, the second semiconductor layer being doped with Zn, Cd, Cl, Br, or I. A semiconductor laser comprises a substrate and a double-hetero structure formed on the substrate, the double-hetero structure having: a p-type semiconductor layer, an active layer formed on the p-type semiconductor layer, and n-type semiconductor layer formed on the active layer, each of the p-type semiconductor layer and n-type semiconductor layer consisting essentially of (Cu.sub.a Ag.sub.1-a)(Al.sub.b Ga.sub.1-b)(Se.sub.o S.sub.1-o).sub.2, wherein 0.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.1, 0.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.1, and 0.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.1, the active layer consisting essentially of (Zn.sub.d Cd.sub.1-d)(Se.sub.m S.sub.n Te.sub.1-m-n), wherein 0.ltoreq.d.ltoreq.1, 0.ltoreq.m.ltoreq.1, 0.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.1, and m+n.ltoreq.1.

Semiconductor light-emitting devices

Light-emitting semiconductor devices comprising a substrate and a p-n junction structure formed on the substrate are described. The p-n junction structure is made of a combination of a wide gap semiconductor layer made of a p-type chalcopyrite semiconductor of the formula, (Cu.sub.a Ag.sub.1-a)(Al.sub.b Ga.sub.1-b)(Se or S).sub.2 wherein 0.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.1 and 0.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.1, and an n-type II-VI semiconductor of the formula, (Zn.sub.c Cd.sub.1-c)(S.sub.d Se.sub.1-d or Se.sub.d Te.sub.1-d) wherein 0.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.1 and 0.ltoreq.d.ltoreq.1. By this, light-emitting diodes are obtained. When an active layer is provided between the n and p-type layers, semiconductor laser devices are obtained. These devices are capable of emitting blue light to UV light.
