The invention is concerning the writing controlling apparatus that includes an acquiring unit configured to acquire a plurality of light amounts of a light source driven while changing an input current in non-effective scanning periods during which an image carrier is not irradiated with light from the light source, as a plurality of output results; a detecting unit configured to detect characteristics of the light source using the output results thus acquired; and a correcting unit configured to correct a current to be applied to the light source based on the characteristics thus detected.

A rotating deflection unit deflects a laser light emitted from a light-emitting element and performs a scanning with the laser light. A light-intensity detecting unit detects a light intensity of the laser light. A current control unit controls a current to be supplied to the light-emitting element so that the light intensity of the laser light reaches a target light intensity. An initializing unit determines an initial current value with which the target light intensity is obtained from the light-emitting element by eliminating an influence of a noise caused by a reflected light input into the light-intensity detecting unit from the rotating deflection unit.

An image forming apparatus capable of properly performing an initialization of a control circuit including a laser diode driver circuit, includes a light source, a photoreceptor, a deflector, and a controller. The photoreceptor is built in the light source to detect incident light. The deflector deflects the laser light into a scanning laser beam. A color image forming apparatus including tandem type image forming units that form images of different colors, respectively. The image forming units form test marks of different colors on a conveyor belt in its conveying direction at predetermined intervals. The test marks include linear position displacement detecting test marks and density detecting test marks. Each of the linear position displacement detecting test marks extends in a direction perpendicular to the conveying direction of the conveyor belt, and each of the density detecting test marks includes an area having a predetermined density and being adjacent to each of the linear position displacement detecting test marks. A detection operation for detecting position displacements of the linear position displacement detecting test marks in a sub-scanning direction of the conveyor belt and a detection operation for detecting densities of the density detecting test marks are performed, based on detection signals output from sensors.
