An apparatus for treating wastes includes a fluidized bed reactor for partially combusting the wastes at a relatively low temperature, and a separate relatively high temperature reactor for separate gasification of gaseous material and char from the first gasification. This synthesis gas thus formed is cooled, subjected to a conversion operation in a converter to produce hydrogen.

A method and apparatus for treating wastes by two-stage gasification recovers metals or ash content in the wastes in such a state that they can be recycled, and gases containing carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen gas (H ) for use as synthesis gas for ammonia (NH ) or production of hydrogen gas. The wastes are gasified in a fluidized-bed reactor at a low temperature. Then, gaseous material and char produced in the fluidized-bed reactor are introduced into a high-temperature combustor, and gasified at a high temperature and ash content is converted into molten slag. After water scrubbing and a CO conversion reaction, the gas is separated into H and residual gas. The residual gas is then supplied to the fluidized-bed reactor as a fluidizing gas.

The amount of oxygen supplied to the fluidized-bed furnace ( ) is set so as to be the same contained in an amount of air not higher than 30% of the theoretical amount of combustion air. The temperature of the fluidized bed ( ) is maintained at 450&deg; C. to 650&deg; C. so that the combustible gas produced contains a large amount of combustible component. The combustible gas and fine particles produced in the fluidized-bed furnace ( ) are supplied to a melt combustion furnace where they are burned at high temperature, and the resulting ash is melted.

Method of fluidized-bed gasification and melt combustion

A waste gas containing sulfur oxides (SO.sub.x) and/or nitrogen oxides (NO.sub.x) is purified by leading the waste gas to a radiation irradiation zone, adding ammonia (NH.sub.3) to the waste gas before, during or after the irradiation, collecting the resulting by-product (ammonium sulfate and/or ammonium nitrate) by means of a dust collector, and releasing the purified waste gas into the atmosphere. The amount of NH.sub.3 to be added is selected so as to be smaller than an amount calculated from target desulfurization and denitrification efficiencies so that it is possible to reduce the leakage of ammonia despite variations in the composition of the waste gas. Further, an alkaline substance exclusive of ammonia is added to the waste gas either at a position between the electrostatic precipitator and the bag filter or at the upstream side of a reactor outlet or both or within a dust collector or at the upstream side thereof so that the pH of the collected by-product is adjusted to 6 or more, preferably 7 or more, thereby suppressing the adverse effects of sulfamic acid impurities.

An apparatus is disclosed for composting a relatively large quantity of organic materials with a relatively small agitator adapted to travel in a zig-zag path in a generally rectangular heaping zone where the organic materials are piled in a layer.

Apparatus for composting

A composting method uses an 'H'-shaped apparatus comprising four rotatable paddles disposed at each terminal end of the 'H'-shaped arrangement, the apparatus as a whole being reversibly movable in the direction of the horizontal bar of the 'H' shape. A plurality of composting sections are arranged in a row along and at opposite sides of the horizontal bar. The composting operation is performed for the plurality of sections according to a predetermined schedule so that, when the apparatus is under operation, four sections are simultaneously under operation, one of the four sections may be receiving material and three sections are simultaneously under agitation by the paddles and at the other section or sections the material may be taken away.
