A hydrogen-fueled engine has an intake valve, a hydrogen supply valve and an exhaust valve, which are operated to open and close relative to a combustion chamber, and a control valve provided in a hydrogen supply pipe to control the output of the engine through the control of the flow amount of hydrogen. This control valve is a pressure control valve to adjust the pressure of hydrogen to be supplied. The hydrogen supply valve is operated by an apparatus of the type capable of adjusting the lift and the valve timing. In this engine, the hydrogen to be supplied to the combustion chamber is controlled on the basis of control signals corresponding to load conditions by both the pressure control valve and the hydrogen supply valve under at least one of either the low-load condition or the high-load condition, and substantially only by the pressure control valve under an intermediate-load condition.

Method of controlling the supply of fuel in hydrogen-fueled engine

An intake system of an internal combustion engine includes first and second intake valve openings provided in the engine body and exposed to a combustion chamber, first and second intake valves in the engine body for opening and closing the valve openings, respectively, and a valve operating system connected to the intake valves for changing the modes of operation of the valves in compliance with the operation of the engine, wherein the engine body is provided with a swirl producing intake port leading to the first intake valve opening and a substantially linear main intake port leading to the second intake valve opening, and wherein the valve operating system is capable of changing over between a state meeting a low speed operation of the engine in which the first intake valve is operated in a mode corresponding to the low speed operation and the second intake valve is in a resting or substantially resting condition, and a state meeting at least a part of operational ranges of the engine other than the low speed operation in which the valves are operated in a mode corresponding to a high speed operation of the engine.

A valve operating mechanism for operating a plurality of valves of a particular cylinder of an internal combustion engine includes a camshaft rotatable in synchronism with rotation of the internal combustion engine and having at least one cam. At least one of a plurality of cam followers slidably engages the cam for selectively operating the valves according to a cam profile of the cam. The cam followers are selectively interconnected and disconnected to operate the valves in different speed ranges of the internal combustion engine, the speed ranges including a range in which all of the valves remain inoperative. The camshaft has one or two annular raised portions in addition to the cam, and the cam followers include one or two cam followers which slidably engage the raised portion or portions. The valves remain inoperative by the annular portion or portions and are operated in a high-speed range by the cam, or selectively in low- and high-speed ranges by low- and high-speed ranges.

Valve operating mechanism for internal combustion engine

A valve operating mechanism for operating a single valve of a particular cylinder of an internal combustion engine includes a camshaft rotatable in synchronism with rotation of the internal combustion engine and having at least one cam, and a plurality of cam followers, one of which slidably engages the cam for selectively operating the valves according to a cam profile of the cam. The cam followers are selectively interconnected and disconnected to operate the valve differently in different speed ranges of the internal combustion engine. In different embodiments, the camshaft has an annular raised portion and low- and high-speed cams, or low-, medium-, and high-speed cams, or an annular raised portion and a cam, and the cam followers are held in sliding contact with these raised portion and cams. The valve is selectively kept inoperative by the raised portion and operated in low- and high-speed ranges by the low- and high-speed cams, or selectively operated in low-, medium-, and high-speed ranges by the low-, medium-, and high-speed cams, or selectively kept inoperative by the raised portion and operated in a high-speed range by the cam.

A valve operating mechanism for operating a plurality of valves of an internal combustion engine includes a camshaft rotatable in synchronism with rotation of the internal combustion engine and having an array of three cams including a high-speed cam positioned at one end of the array. Three cam followers are held in sliding contact with the cams, respectively, for operating the valves according to cam profiles of the cams. The cam followers are selectively interconnected and disconnected to operate the valves at different valve timings in different speed ranges of the internal combustion engine. The speed ranges include a high-speed range in which all of the valves are controlled by the cam profile of the high-speed cam. The three cams may include low- and medium-speed cams, or two identical or different low-speed cams, in addition to the high-speed cam. These cams may be differently arranged in the array, and the cam followers include those which slidably engage one or two of the cams for operating the valves. The valves are operated selectively in low- and high-speed ranges, or in low-, medium-, and high-speed ranges, with different combinations of the cams.

Apparatus for maintaining the cam follower for operating a valve for an internal combustion engine in biased engagement against the cam includes a first spring operative to bias the cam follower under a low speed engine operating condition and a second spring series-connected to the first spring and having a spring constant greater than that of the first spring operative to bias the cam follower under a high speed engine operating condition.

Valve operating apparatus for an internal combustion engine

A valve operating mechanism for operating at least one valve of an internal combustion engine, includes a camshaft rotatable in synchronism with rotation of the internal combustion engine and having a pair of low- and high-speed cams of different cam profiles, a rocker shaft, and a pair of first and second rocker arms rotatably mounted on the rocker shaft and operable selectively by the low- and high-speed cams for operating the valve according to the cam profiles of the cams. A selective coupling is operatively disposed in and between the first and second rocker arms for interconnecting the first and second rocker arms in high-speed operation of the engine and for disconnecting the first and second rocker arms from each other in low-speed operation of the engine.

A valve operating mechanism includes a camshaft rotatable in synchronism with rotation of an internal combustion engine and having a plurality of cams of different cam profiles. First, second, and third rocker arms are held in sliding contact with the cams, respectively, for operating the valves according to the cam profiles of the cams. The rocker arms are selectively interconnected and disconnected by first and second selective couplings to operate the valves at different valve timings in low, medium, and high speed ranges of the internal combustion engine.

A valve operating mechanism for operating a pair of valves of an internal combustion engine, includes a camshaft rotatable in synchronism with rotation of the internal combustion engine and having a first low-speed cam, a second low-speed cam, and a high-speed cam which have different cam profiles, respectively, the first and second low-speed cams being disposed one on each side of the high-speed cam, a rocker shaft, and first, second, and third rocker arms rotatably mounted on the rocker shaft and held in sliding contact with the first low-speed cam, the second low-speed cam, and the high-speed cam, respectively, for operating the valves according to the cam profiles of the cams. A selective coupling is operatively disposed in and between the first, second, and third rocker arms for selectively interconnecting the first, second, and third rocker arms to allow angular movement thereof in unison and disconnecting the first, second, and third rocker arms to allow separate angular movement thereof.

An internal combustion engine valve operating mechanism wherein there is a low speed cam corresponding to one intake valve or exhaust valve and having a shape designed for low speed operation as well as a high speed cam of a shape designed for high speed operation. A first rocker arm is in sliding contact with the low speed cam and abuts one intake valve or exhaust valve, a second rocker arm is in sliding contact with the high speed cam and a third rocker arm abuts the other intake valve or exhaust valve, with all three rocker arms pivotably supported by a single rocker shaft adjacent to each other. A first piston for connecting the first and second rocker arms is slidably mounted in the first rocker arm and a second piston for connecting the second and third rocker arms is slidably mounted in the second rocker arm extendable and contractable. A third piston is movably mounted in the third rocker arm and urged by a spring in a direction of abutment with the second piston. An annular engaging groove is formed in the outer surface of the first piston, and the first rocker arm is provided with a connecting and disconnection start controlling mechanisms for being engaged with or disengaged from the groove only when the first rocker arm pivots in a valve opening direction. Consequently, the rocker arm connecting and disconnecting operations are performed at the beginning of a valve closing section ensuring the proper completion of the operation.

Valve operating and interrupting mechanism for internal combustion engine

A valve actuating apparatus for an internal combustion engine having selectively energizable intake/exhaust valves. Oil is supplied to valve actuators which perform the selective energization of the valve through a spool valve. The spool valve has a bypass for supplying operating oil to the actuators when the spool valve is set to the unenergized position in an amount insufficient for energizing the actuators but sufficient to purge air from the lines connecting the spool valve to the actuators. By so doing, the responsiveness of the actuator system is improved.

Valve actuating apparatus

An internal combustion piston engine of the torch ignition type employs an auxiliary combustion chamber connected by a torch passage to a compact main combustion chamber. A spark plug has electrodes located adjacent the upstream end of the torch passage and remote from the intake valve for the auxiliary combustion chamber. At least one suction conduit intersects the torch passage between its ends and extends from a peripheral zone of the main combustion chamber. This zone may comprise a squish zone which increases flow of air-fuel mixture into the torch passage to follow the torch flame into the main combustion chamber. A cavity in the engine head may receive the torch flame from one or more torch passages.

Torch ignition type internal combustion engine

Method and apparatus for suspending valve actuation for use in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. Each of intake and exhaust valves is normally actuated by a rocker arm operated by a cam in synchronism with an engine operation. The rocker arm is supported at one end by a supporting member held to a cylinder head by means of a retaining member. The supporting member is selectively floatable with respect to the cylinder head to thereby effect suspension of valve operation. The supporting member is then held at a position where sliding contact between the rocker arm and the cam is prevented.
