A titanium compound for photochemical reactions having a high catalytic activity per unit surface area and extremely good stability to heat treatment is made of a substitutional solid solution of titanium oxide in which aluminum atoms occupy titanium sites of the titanium oxide uniformly at a predetermined ratio. Aluminum atoms preferably occupy about 0.01 to 0.5% of the titanium sites. The titanium compound for photochemical reactions is obtained from a complex alkoxide of titanium and aluminum.

Titanium compound for photochemical reactions and method for producing

Thin films of the lead titanate system expressed by the general formula: Pb(Zr.sub.x Ti.sub.1-x)O.sub.3, where 0.ltoreq.x&lt;1, are produced by (a) preparing a complex alkoxide including at least lead and titanium atoms by a liquid-phase reaction of lead carboxylate with at least one alkoxide of titanium and zirconium alkoxides, (b) dissolving the resultant complex alkoxide in water to prepare an aqueous solution of the complex alkoxide, and (c) immersing a substrate in the resultant aqueous solution to deposit a thin film of the lead titanate system on said substrate by hydrolysis of the complex alkoxide. The resultant thin film may heated to a temperature ranging from 400 to 900.degree. C. to produce thin films with a perovskite structure.

Production of thin films of a lead titanate system

A thin film of strontium titanate is formed on a substrate by immersing a substrate in an aqueous solution containing strontium ions and titanium alkoxide. The aqueous solution may contain not more than 20 vol % of one or more alkanolamines expressed by the general formula:

Production of strontium titanate thin films

A thin film of barium titanate is formed on a substrate by immersing a substrate in an aqueous solution containing titanium ions along with a glass substance mainly comprising barium oxide and silicon dioxide. In the solution, barium ions are eluted from the glass substance with the solution to react with titanium ions in the solution to deposit barium titanate on the substrate.

Method for formation of barium titanate film

A thin film of barium titanate is formed on a substrate by immersing the substrate in an aqueous solution containing barium ions and titanium alkoxide. The aqueous solution may contain not more than 20 vol % of one or more alkanolamines expressed by the general formula:
