An optical delay line of a configuration in which a number of components such as a circulator and an optical coupler is reduced is to be provided. To this end, the optical delay line has a configuration in which, after an optical fiber diffraction grating having a core subjected to refractive index modulation and a cladding partly cleared of its outer circumference and an optical fiber having a cladding partly cleared of its outer circumference are brought close to each other so that the cores have mutually parallel directions of an optical axis to fabricate a directional coupler, both ends of the optical fiber are connected into an optical fiber loop. In this way, an optical delay line to generate a specific time delay for controlling optical signals can be provided in small dimensions and with a small number of components.

An optical wavelength filter having one or more bands of transmission wavelengths of light, within a reflection spectrum of the filter, is formed using a section of an optical fiber as an optical fiber grating. The optical fiber core is configured with a periodically varying diffraction coefficient structure formed such that the grating pitch continuously varies in a fixed direction, with that structure containing one or more regions of interruption of the continuous variation of pitch, whereby the bands of transmission wavelengths are respectively defined by these interruption regions.

An object of the present invention is to provide a device that performs dispersive compensation in an optical fiber transmission path, such as performing waveform shaping in optical fiber transmission. This adaptive dispersion compensating element is provided with a chirp Bragg grating formed in an optical fiber, a temperature gradient impressing means that impresses a temperature gradient along the longitudinal direction of the chirp Bragg grating, a spectral resolving means that spectrally resolves the output light from the chirp Bragg grating, a detecting means that detects the output light from the spectral resolving means, and a control means that performs feedback control of the temperature gradient impressing means based on the output from the detecting means and provides a compact and high-stability device that performs the dispersive compensation in the optical fiber transmission path, such as performing the waveform shaping in the optical fiber transmission.

A total capacitance between each active layer and the supporting substrate is small and an inversion layer formed at a bottom of the active layer in the conventional SOI substrate is prevented from being induced. The power IC is constituted at least by an element A in a first active layer and an element B in a second active layer operating in association with the element A. The first active layer is electrically connected to the SOI conductive film just under the first and second active layers. A potential difference is prevented from being applied to the second active layer of the element B upon operation of the element A. With this arrangement, even if an operating voltage of the power IC is raised, independent operation of each element is retained. Furthermore, a low on-resistance of an output stage power-element is realized, and the device characteristics such as high speed operation and high conversion efficiency are provided.

Another device depolarizes light propagating in the sensing loop. The invention further controls and processes an output signal representing the output of the photodetector at a phase at which a level of an AM noise component of the output signal is minimized.
