A magnetic write head having a heat sink structure located adjacent to a trailing magnetic shield. The heat sink structure prevents heat generated by the magnetic oscillator current from causing damage to and reducing reliability of the magnetic write head. The trailing magnetic shield is substantially aligned with the magnetic oscillator, allowing the heat sink structure to wrap around the sides and back of the trailing magnetic shield and to provide good heat conduction away from the write pole, magnetic oscillator and trailing magnetic shield. The heat sink structure can be constructed of a material such as Ru, TiN, Cu, Au, Ag and AlN, and is preferably constructed of Au, which has excellent thermal properties.

A system includes a magnetic head, a magnetic medium, a drive mechanism for passing the magnetic medium over the magnetic head, and a controller electrically coupled to the magnetic head for controlling operation of the magnetic head, wherein the magnetic head has a write element, a read element, a substrate that is an alloy material having greater than about 50 at. % TiC, and a heater element positioned between the read element and the write element, the write element being positioned nearer to the substrate than the read element such that heat generated by the write element during write operations is dissipated by the substrate, and the heater element being adapted for inducing protrusion of portions of an air bearing surface (ABS) of the magnetic head to adjust a clearance between the portions of the ABS and the magnetic medium.

The present disclosure generally relates to clearance control between a magnetic head and a recording medium in a magnetic disk device. A magnetic head comprises an embedded contact sensor, a thermal flying height control element, and a hard disk drive controller. The hard disk drive controller is adapted to control a detection current of the embedded contact sensor and a power applied to the thermal flying height control. The detection current supplied to the embedded contact sensor is optimized so that a change in resistance of the embedded contact sensor is less sensitive relative to the power applied to the thermal flying height control. The resistance of the embedded contact sensor remains unchanged when the power applied to the thermal flying height control is changed to adjust for changes in the clearance. Thus, clearance changes can be detected by monitoring changes in the resistance of the embedded contact sensor.

In one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a magnetic disk includes rotating a magnetic disk, supporting a floating head on the rotating magnetic disk, the floating head having a slider body and an element unit formed on a trailing edge of the slider body, contacting a floating surface of the slider body with the magnetic disk, and protruding a portion of the floating head toward the magnetic disk due to application of power to a heater element within the element unit, wherein the element unit is positioned away from the magnetic disk. In another embodiment, a floating head includes a slider body comprising AlTiC, an element unit positioned on a trailing edge of the slider body, the element unit having an initial recess amount of at least about 4 nm, and a heater element positioned within an alumina protective film of the element unit.

The air-bearing surface includes air-bearing portions, shallow-recessed surfaces, and a deep-recessed surface. Air-bearing portions are configured to fly nearest to a magnetic-recording disk; shallow-recessed surfaces have a first depth from the air-bearing portions; the deep-recessed surface has a second depth, larger than the first depth, from the air-bearing portions. In a hydraulic rotary machine having rotational shaft provided within a casing a rotational shaft, a cylinder block rotationally interlocked with the rotational shaft and formed with a plural number of cylinder bores, and pistons slidably received in the cylinder bores and adapted to slide back and forth within the cylinder bores while the rotational shaft and the cylinder block are put in rotation in synchronism with each other, a multitude of minute pits are formed at least either on sliding surfaces on the side of the cylinder bores, each one of the minute pits are in an elliptical shape defining a moderately sloped surface in one side and an acutely sloped surface in the other side, and the moderately sloped surfaces of the minute pits are oriented to face a direction in which said pistons are put in sliding movement in said cylinder bores under a greater load than in the other direction.

A head slider for a magnetic disk drive is provided. The head slider includes a leading edge, a trailing edge, an inner diameter side and an outer diameter side of an air bearing surface. The head slider further includes a first recess on the air bearing surface of the head slider, the first recess defining a first rail proximate the inner diameter side and a second rail proximate the outer diameter side wherein the first rail and the second rail are higher with respect to the recess and are asymmetrical with respect to each other.

The ratio of a slider length Lx to a slider width Ly satisfies the following inequality: 1.35&#x2266;Lx/Ly&#x2266;1.8, where the slider width Ly is 0.8 mm or less.

Compact magnetic head slider with reduced bearing surfaces

Embodiments of the invention relate to manufacturing method of a magnetic head slider which flies stably even with a reduced peripheral speed resulting from a trend toward a magnetic disk having a smaller diameter. According to one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a magnetic head slider comprises forming a leading side rail surface and a trailing side rail surface, a leading stepped bearing surface and a trailing stepped bearing surface, and a negative-pressure groove surface on an air bearing surface through etching, forming a first stepped surface on the leading side rail surface through sputtering, and forming a second stepped surface by forming a carbon layer on the first stepped surface through sputtering. The first stepped surface has a first height with respect to the leading side rail surface and the second stepped surface has a second height with respect to the first stepped surface.

Method of manufacturing a magnetic slider head

A compact slider has a reduced area of bearing surfaces, thus substantially decreasing a lifting force obtained through an air bearing characteristic. In one embodiment, a shallowly grooved surface and air bearing surfaces are disposed on an inflow side of a bearing surface of a slider. The air bearing surfaces are connected to each other through a connection air bearing surface. Side shallowly grooved surfaces are respectively disposed rearward of the air bearing surfaces. The side shallowly grooved surface extends up to a point near an outflow end. A center air bearing surface is disposed on the outflow end of the slider. A magnetic head is mounted on the center air bearing surface. A center shallowly grooved surface is disposed on an inflow side of the center air bearing surface. A deeply grooved surface is disposed at a center of the bearing surface. No cutting margins are provided on both sides of the slider. The air bearing surfaces on the inflow side therefore reach end faces in a width direction of the slider.

A magnetic disk unit includes a magnetic disk attached to a spindle so as to be rotatable, a slider having a magnetic head for reading/writing data onto/from the magnetic disk, a suspension for providing the slider with a predetermined load, and an actuator arm for positioning the slider attached to the suspension on the magnetic disk. A first pad including the magnetic head and second pads including no magnetic heads are disposed on an air bearing surface of the slider. During rotation of said magnetic disk, a part of the first pad keeps in contact with the magnetic disk. A load point of the suspension with respect to the slider is positioned between a leading edge of the slider and a position located at a distance equivalent to substantially 0.42 times a whole length of the slider from the leading edge of the slider.
