An electronic instrument has a power unit configured to allow insertion of a cell and to supply an electric power output from the inserted cell, a charging unit configured to charge the cell inserted in the power unit, and a voltage detecting unit configured to detect a voltage value of the cell inserted in the power unit. A cell type determining unit is configured to determine that the cell inserted in the power unit is a secondary cell as a rechargeable battery when the voltage value detected by the voltage detecting unit is a value equal to or lower than a predetermined threshold value and to determine that the cell inserted in the power unit is a primary cell as a non-rechargeable battery when the voltage value detected by the voltage detecting unit is larger than the predetermined threshold value.

A display device includes independently driven common and segment terminals. The common and segment terminals are connected to display components divided into display blocks that are turned ON to perform a display function and are turned OFF so as to not perform the display function. A first driver drives the common terminals using a scanning signal of a predetermined period and a second driver drives the segment terminals using a segment signal synchronized with the scanning signal to correspond to a display signal, so that the display components perform a display corresponding to the display signal. The first driver separates the common terminals into common terminal blocks and drives the common terminals. The first and second drivers perform the driving so that the common and segment terminals which are connected to display blocks that are turned OFF are not supplied with a turn-off signal and are maintained at ground potential.

A power supply unit has a first power supply circuit that supplies a voltage to a load driving unit and a second power supply circuit that supplies a voltage to circuits other than the load driving unit. A first switching unit connects any one of a power supply that supplies a power supply voltage and a voltage step-down circuit that supplies a step-down voltage of the power supply voltage to the first power supply circuit. A second switching unit connects any one of the power supply and the voltage step-down circuit to the second power supply circuit. A control unit controls the connection by the first switching unit and the connection by the second switching unit to switch the voltage supplied to the first power supply circuit and the voltage supplied to the second power supply circuit in accordance with properties of the load driving unit.

To realize miniaturization and detection of a walk state in which no arm is swung in an electronic pedometer in which at least a walk sensor is used in a state of being worn on a wrist. An acceleration sensor is disposed so that a sensitivity axis of the acceleration sensor is located in a range of 30&#xb0; or smaller in a counterclockwise direction from the direction of 90&#xb0; with respect to a longitudinal direction of a belt. A user of an electronic pedometer wears the electronic pedometer on his/her left wrist using the belt and starts processing for counting the number of steps by manipulating a manipulation portion, and also starts to walk, thereby starting counting the number of steps. The user checks the counted number of steps and the measured time period based on displayed contents on a step number display portion and a time display portion of a display portion.

To restrain a communicatable distance from being shortened even when a power source voltage is lowered. A heart beat signal transmission control portion controls a resonance starting oscillation portion to output a start signal in synchronism with a heart beat signal detected by a heart beat signal detecting portion and controls a resonance starting portion to output a biometric information signal in response to the start signal. An element switching portion receives a signal representing a voltage supplied from a battery portion from a voltage detecting portion and instructs the resonance starting oscillation portion to set the start signal to a period in correspondence therewith. The resonance starting oscillation portion outputs the start signal by a period in correspondence with instruction of the element switching portion. The resonance starting portion and an antenna resonance portion carry out self-excited oscillation operation in response to each start signal and transmit the biometric information signal in correspondence with the biometric signal by high power even when a power source is lowered.

Biometric information transmitter

A pedometer measures the walk of a person and has an operating portion operated by the person to change the display mode. When operation of the operating portion is detected, a CPU proceeds to a walk determining mode, counts a walk signal from an acceleration sensor to successively store to a walk step number buffer memory, proceeds to a walk step number measuring mode when walking is determined in the walk determining mode, adds the walk step number stored to a walk step number memory, thereafter, continuously measures the walk step number, and adds the walk signal to the walk step number of the walk step number at each time of receiving the walk signal from the acceleration sensor. In this manner, operation of the operating portion to change display modes is not erroneously detected as a walk, thereby improving the measurement accuracy.

Pedometer that avoids step-counting errors when switching between different display modes

An electronic pedometer has a walk detecting sensor to detect a walking movement of a user and to output a walk signal corresponding to the walking movement. A walk judging circuit judges, based on a walk signal from the walk detecting circuit, whether or not the user is walking. A control circuit switches an operation of the walk detecting circuit from a continuous operation to an intermittent operation when the walk judging circuit judges that the user stops walking. During a continuous operation, the walk detecting circuit continuously detects a walk of the user, while during an intermittent operation the walk detecting circuit intermittently detects the walk of the user within a predetermined cycle.

An electronic pedometer has a walk sensor that detects a walking movement of a user and outputs a walk signal corresponding to the walking movement. The walk sensor has a sensitivity axis along which a detection sensitivity of the walking movement by the walk sensor becomes a maximum. A calculation circuit calculates a number of walking steps of the user in accordance with the walk signal. A strap mounts the walk sensor on a part of the user's body so that the sensitivity axis of the walk sensor is located within a range of 30 degrees or less in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction from an axis disposed at 90 degrees with respect to a longitudinal direction of the strap.
