A veneer dehydrating apparatus which has a pair of rotatable dehydrating roll assemblies disposed one above the other and having their axes extending parallel to each other, at least one of which is positively driven. The paired roll assemblies includes a first roll assembly having formed on the peripheral surface thereof a number of tooth-like projections extending radially outward from the peripheral surface and a second roll assembly having a steel core shaft which is clad with covering of elastic material such as urethane rubber with a predetermined thickness. The axes of the roll assemblies are a spaced radially to form a clearance or a nip between the peripheral surfaces thereof which is smaller than the thickness of the veneer sheet to be dehydrated. The second roll assembly has formed therein a number of annular grooves spaced axially of the second roll assembly at an interval of 50 mm or less and each having a width of 10 mm or less, thereby having a number of sectional elastic portions which are separated by any two adjacent annular grooves and each of such elastic portions being deformable independently of other similar portions.

Veneer dehydrating apparatus

A veneer dehydrating apparatus is disclosed which is intended to squeeze out part of water contained in green softwood veneer. The apparatus includes a pair of parallel rolls assemblies rotatable in opposite directions and disposed one above the other to be spaced apart from each other thereby to define an open nip between the circumferential peripheries thereof, and a conveyer for feeding successively sheets of green softwood veneer with the fiber orientation thereof directed along the feeding direction into said nip. One of the roll assemblies has formed on the peripheral surface thereof a number of individual projections pierceable into said veneer sheet at the nip. Each projection has a pyramidal shape with N faces, wherein N represents an integral number of four or more. The paired roll assemblies are spaced apart from each other to provide the open nip such that the shortest distance between the peripheral surfaces of said roll assemblies facing each other is larger than the radial height of said projections and corresponds to about 75 to 90 percent the thickness of the veneer sheet.

Apparatus for dehydrating softwood veneer

A substantially uncurved and unwaved plywood includes at least one pair of veneers located symmetrically with respect to a middle of a thickness of the plywood and having unstraight grains which coincide with each other. A method for producing a substantially uncurved and unwaved plywood comprises locating at least one pair of veneers with identical unstraight grains in a pair of positions symmetrical with respect to a middle of a thickness of a plywood to be produced, in such a manner than the grains of the veneers coincide with each other. A simple method for continuously preparing pairs of veneers with identical unstraight grains comprises (i) peeling from a cylindrical log with unstraight fibers a continuous sheet of twice a thickness of each one of a pair of veneers to be prepared, (ii) cutting the sheet into a predetermined length to provide a thick veneer, and (iii) slicing the thick veneer at a middle of a thickness thereof to prepare a pair of veneers with equal thicknesses and with identical unstraight grains. Another simple method for continuously preparing pairs of veneers with identical unstraight grains includes slicing the continuous sheet before cutting into the predetermined length. Other methods for continuously preparing pairs of veneers with identical unstraight grains are also disclosed.

Substantially uncurved and unwaved plywood produced by using veneers

A veneer dehydrating apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of rolls disposed so as to form a nip between the peripheries thereof through which a green veneer sheet is passed. At least one of the rolls has on its periphery a number of tooth-like projections separated from one another by grooves formed on the roll periphery. Each projection is pierceable into a veneer sheet to squeeze out part of water contained in the veneer sheet by compression exerted thereto by the projection piercing thereinto. The toothed roll has an elastic filler member fitted round the roll so as to fill the spaces between the projection. The elastic filler member comprises an elastic portion made of, e.g., sponge rubber and a reinforcement portion made of, e.g., fabric and secured to one surface of the elastic portion and seated firmly against the radially innermost surface of the grooves.

A device is disclosed which is adapted to tenderize wood veneer sheet by feeding such sheet into the nip between a pair of rotating rolls at least one of which rolls has on the periphery thereof a number of projections arranged to incise the sheet for forming therein checks along the direction of grain orientation of the wood veneer sheet. Each projection on the roll has a pointed distal tip end and a proximal broad base, and at least the portion of the projection adjacent the distal tip end thereof is of a pyramidal shape having a vertex corresponding to said distal tip end and N sides, wherein N stands for an even number of more than two, with said sides intersecting to define edges of said pyramidal shape between any two adjoining such sides. The pyramidal shape for the projection includes a pair of opposite edges extending in opposite directions from said vertex and so oriented that a phantom plane containing such opposite edges is parallel to a straight phantom line drawn on the peripheral surface of said one roll in parallel to the axis thereof.

Veneer tenderizing device

Apparatus for tenderizing veneer sheets which comprises a pair of rotatable press means each having, on their surfaces, a plurality of projections having tops for pressing a veneer sheet to be tenderized. The projection tops of one of the press means and those of the other press means intersect each other at certain angles when opposed to each other during rotation thereof, and press against the veneer sheet from opposite sides when the sheet is passed between the press means, so as to produce small cracks in the sheet.

Apparatus for tenderizing veneer sheets

A veneer processing apparatus squeezes water out of a crude veneer when the veneer is inserted into the apparatus in such an orientation that fibers thereof extending substantially parallel to an intended direction of veneer insertion, and forms short splits in the veneer when the veneer is oriented such that the fibers extend substantially perpendicular to that direction. A pair of rolls each being provided with teeth thereon are so located as to cause their teeth to become aligned with each other at a predetermined position for veneer insertion. Each teeth is indented to have alternating projections and recesses. In the position for veneer insertion, the projections of the teeth on one roll are substantially interlocked with the recesses of the teeth on the other roll or are spaced from the projections of the teeth on the latter roll by an amount which is smaller than the thickness of the veneer. The recesses are filled with sponge or like elastic material. The rolls may each be replaced with an assembly of annular roll elements coaxially mounted on a rotary shaft, or an endless belt which is passed over rollers.

Veneer processing apparatus

An apparatus for dehydrating a crude veneer includes a pair of spaced parallel rolls each being provided with teeth on the periphery thereof which become sequentially aligned with those of the other roll as the rolls are rotated in opposite directions to each other. A veneer is passed through the gap between the rolls to efficiently squeeze out water while being subjected to a minimum of plastic deformation. This is accomplished by optimumly selecting the distance between the tips of the teeth on the two rolls as well as the distance between the peripheries of the rolls except for the teeth. The periphery of each roll is covered with an elastic material such as sponge in order to prevent water once pressed out from the veneer by the teeth from permeating into the veneer again.

Apparatus for dehydrating crude veneer

A method and apparatus for removing moisture in a veneer are disclosed. The method comprises jetting a compressed gas against at least either tangential face of a veneer in feeding in order to remove moisture contained within the wood structure of it. The apparatus comprises a feeding mechanism of a veneer, a compressed gas jetting equipment with jetting apertures formed in a continuous or discontinuous manner in the traversing direction with respect to the feeding direction for jetting against at least one face of a veneer in feeding, a gas compressor communicating with the compressed gas jetting equipment, and a veneer supporting member arranged oposite the compressed gas jetting equipment and adapted to support the veneer to be jetted with the compressed gas from the other side of it.

Method and apparatus for removing moisture in veneer

A veneer sheet and an adhesive coated sheet are placed on a piling table. Two vertically arranged conveyors each independently conveys one veneer sheet and stops at predetermined position, pressing member presses two sheets simultaneously vertically downwards onto the piling table where the sheets are placed.

Apparatus of manufacturing plywood

A veneer reinforcing unit is provided. The unit comprises a first cutter which functions as a cutter for trimming a veneer sheet and a second cutter which extends from one or both sides of the blade of said first cutter. During a trimming action of the first cutter, the second cutter cuts in the veneer sheet at its butt ends newly formed by the first cutter. The thus obtained veneer sheet is ready for any reinforcing step. However, if the first and second cutters are additionally provided with a hole to pay out a cord therethrough, the cut formed in the butt end of the veneer sheet firmly hold the cord since the veneer sheet has a tendency to close the cut after the passage of the second cutter, providing a reinforced veneer sheet.
