A non-aqueous electrolyte battery is provided that shows good cycle performance and good storage performance under high temperature conditions and exhibits high reliability even with a battery configuration featuring high capacity. A method of manufacturing the battery is also provided. A non-aqueous electrolyte battery includes: a positive electrode having a positive electrode active material layer containing a positive electrode active material; a negative electrode having a negative electrode active material layer containing a negative electrode active material; a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; an electrode assembly including the positive electrode, the negative electrode, and the separator; and a non-aqueous electrolyte impregnated in the electrode assembly, characterized in that: the positive electrode active material contains at least cobalt or manganese; and a coating layer is formed on a surface of the negative electrode active material layer, the coating layer including filler particles and a binder.

Non-aqueous electrolyte battery and method of manufacturing the same

A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the invention includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte, the positive electrode including lithium transition metal oxide particles as a positive electrode active material, the lithium transition metal oxide particles containing nickel as a main transition metal component and being such that a first compound containing at least one element Ma selected from the group consisting of Group IV elements and Group V elements is sintered to a portion of the surface of the lithium transition metal oxide particles, the first compound having a composition different from that of the lithium transition metal oxide particles, the positive electrode further including a second compound containing at least one element Mb selected from the group consisting of Group VI elements, the second compound having a composition different from that of the lithium transition metal oxide particles.

Nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a positive electrode including an aluminum foil and a positive electrode active material layer formed thereon

A positive electrode active material capable of improving an output performance of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided. A positive electrode active material of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batterycontains a first positive electrode active material and a second positive electrode active material. In the first positive electrode active material, the content of cobalt is 15% or more on an atomic percent basis in transition metals. In the second positive electrode active material, the content of cobalt is 5% or less on an atomic percent basis in transition metals. An average secondary particle diameter r1 of the first positive electrode active material is smaller than an average secondary particle diameter r2 of the second positive electrode active material.

Positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, and nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery

Good cycle performance is obtained with a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a non-aqueous electrolyte. The positive electrode contains as positive electrode active material a mixture of a lithium-manganese composite oxide and a lithium-transition metal composite oxide containing at least Ni and Mn as transition metals. The negative electrode contains as a negative electrode active material a material capable of intercalating and deintercalating lithium. Charging of the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is controlled so that the end-of-charge voltage becomes higher than 4.3 V.

Method of charging and discharging a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery uses as its positive electrode active material a mixture of a first lithium-containing transition metal oxide containing nickel and manganese as transition metals and having a crystal structure belonging to the space group R3m and a second lithium-containing transition metal oxide containing nickel, cobalt, and manganese as transition metals and having a crystal structure belonging to the space group R3m, or a mixture of the first lithium-containing transition metal oxide and a lithium cobalt oxide. Non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery has a positive electrode (1), a negative electrode (2), and a non-aqueous electrolyte. The positive electrode has a positive electrode mixture layer containing a positive electrode active material, a binder agent, and a conductive agent. The positive electrode active material in the positive electrode mixture layer contains an olivine-type lithium-containing metal phosphate represented by the general formula LiMPO, where M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Ni, Mn, and Fe, and x is 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;1.3. The positive electrode active material layer is superficially coated with a polymer layer composed of a polymer having a partially cross-linked structure and a molecular weight of 800,000 or greater.

The balance between input power and output power and power characteristics are improved, and the initial charge-discharge efficiency and discharge capacity are enhanced.

The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the present invention uses, as the positive electrode active material, a mixture of a lithium-containing transition metal oxide LiNiMnO(wherein a, x, and y respectively satisfy the following relations: 1&#x3c;a&#x2266;1.5; 0.5&#x2266;x+y&#x2266;1; 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;1; and 0&#x3c;y&#x3c;1) containing nickel and manganese as transition metals and having the layered rock-salt type crystal structure of a hexagonal system belonging to space group R-3m and a lithium manganese oxide LiMnO(wherein b satisfies 0&#x2266;b&#x2266;0.33) having the spinel structure.
