A magnetic recording medium and a thin film planar magnetic head form an assembly. The magnetic recording medium of the assembly includes a magnetic coating having a residual magnetization value (Mr) and a thickness value (t) which together form a high product value (Mr)(t) which is preferably greater than about 1.8 memu/cm.sup.2. This coating also has a high coercive field value of Hc which is preferably greater than about 2,200 Oe. The ratio formed by dividing the (Mr)(t)product value by this coercive field value Hc((Mr)(t)/Hc) is preferably approximately 0.7.times.10.sup.-3 memu/cm.sup.2 /Oe or 0.8.times.10.sup.-3 memu/cm.sup.2 /Oe. The product of the (mr)(t) product value and the coercive field value Hc ((Mr)(t)(Hc)) is preferably greater than approximately 4000 Oe.times.memu/cm.sup.2. The overall effect of the present invention is to provide the magnetic medium coating with an enlarged hysteresis loop as compared to that conventionally used with such assemblies so that there is a resulting increased amplitude reading signal with an improved signal to noise ratio.

Magnetic recording medium and magnetic head assembly with a medium

A metal thin film magnetic recording medium comprising an underlying non-magnetic layer and a magnetic layer comprising a Co-alloy having a uni-axial magnetocrystalline anisotropy formed in this order by lamination on the surface of a non-magnetic substrate. On the substrate, are formed a seed layer comprising an oxygen-containing non-magnetic amorphous metal or a seed layer comprising a non-magnetic amorphous metal having an oxygen-containing layer (not illustrated) on the surface, and an underlying non-magnetic layer is laminated on the seed layer. Further, a seed layer comprising an amorphous Cr- or V-alloy is formed on the substrate, and an underlying non-magnetic layer is laminated on the seed layer.

Metal thin film magnetic recording medium and manufacturing method

The present invention provides a metal thin film magnetic recording medium in which an underlying Cr layer, a magnetic recording layer and a protection layer are laminated in this order on a non-magnetic medium substrate. The medium substrate comprises an NiPX layer laminated in this order on a non-metallic base plate such as a glass base plate or a carbon base plate. X is one or mope elements belonging to a group of 4, 5 and 6 in a periodic table, and the content X is less than 20 at % in total. A heat accumulating non-magnetic layer having excellent heat conductivity may be formed on the non-metallic base plate and laminated between the NiPX layer thereon.

Metal thin film magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate, a ground layer formed over at least one surface of the substrate, and a magnetic layer formed over the ground layer, the ground layer being formed of a material containing at least 95% by weight of Cr. The substrate comprises a base of glass plate, a nonmagnetic metal layer formed over at least one surface of the base, and an amorphous NiP layer formed over the nonmagnetic metal layer. The nonmagnetic metal layer is formed of a material containing at least 95% by weight of Cr, or a material containing at least 95% by weight of Ti or a material containing at least 95% by weight of Cr-Ti alloy. The recording medium has excellent flatness and a high coercive force.
