Provided is a display that causes an electric field generated in a transverse or diagonal direction to drive liquid crystals and enables allocation of a contact area for a conducting connection. A transparent electrode layer is formed on a surface of a counter substrate that is opposite to a surface of the counter substrate on which the liquid crystals are disposed. The counter substrate is included in a liquid-crystal display panel. An electrode layer is formed on the rear surface of a protective plate disposed to face the counter electrode. Conductive substances are disposed between the transparent electrode layer and the electrode layer to connect the transparent electrode layer to the electrode layer. A GND connecting part provided in a surrounding area of the protective plate connects the electrode layer formed on the protective plate to, for example, a casing, thus connecting the electrode layer to the GND.

Display

A display panel includes sub-pixel pairs arranged laterally at a predetermined pitch, the sub-pixel pair including two sub pixels displaying images for right and left eyes respectively. A parallax-barrier shutter panel includes sub apertures switching light-transmitting and light-blocking states by driving a liquid crystal layer held between two transparent substrates with transparent electrodes extending vertically. The sub apertures are arranged laterally at a pitch obtained by dividing a reference parallax-barrier pitch by N (N being an even number equal to or greater than four), the reference parallax-barrier pitch being determined on the basis of a predetermined design observation distance and the pitch of the sub-pixel pairs. The parallax-barrier shutter panel includes common driving areas obtained by dividing a display area laterally. (N&#xb7;M+N/2) pieces of the transparent electrodes (M being a positive integer) arranged in the common driving are connected with every N-th one of the transparent electrodes.

Stereoscopic image display apparatus, and drive method therefor

Each pixel of a multiple view liquid crystal display in a normally black mode includes a counter electrode provided with a slit for generating a fringe electric field. An alignment film subjected to liquid crystal alignment processing in a predetermined direction is disposed on a surface of a TFT substrate provided with the counter electrode. An angle formed by an extending direction of a slit at an end of a pixel region (a first region) and a direction of the liquid crystal alignment processing is greater than an angle formed by the extending direction of the slit in a central part of the pixel region (a second region) and the direction of the liquid crystal alignment processing. The first region has a higher transmittance than that in the second region when low luminance display is carried out.

Multiple view liquid crystal display

The display device includes a display panel on which sub-pixel pairs are arranged in a lateral direction, and a parallax barrier shutter panel on which sub-openings that can be changed between a light transmittance state and a light-shielding state are arranged in a lateral direction. Arbitrary allocated number of adjacent sub-openings among the plural sub-openings belonging to a reference parallax barrier pitch are put into a light transmittance state, and the remaining sub-openings are put into a light-shielding state, so that a general opening is formed on the parallax barrier shutter panel. A sub-opening pitch of the sub-opening on the boundary part between the adjacent common driving areas is different from the sub-opening pitch of the other sub-openings.

Display device

Only a first pixel electrode exists just under a first light shielding part of a black matrix, a gate insulating film and an interlayer insulating film exist on the upper layer of the first pixel electrode, and this area is an end area. Just under an opening of the black matrix, a second pixel electrode exists on the uppermost layer of a TFT substrate. The second pixel electrode is formed on the gate insulating film and the interlayer insulating film except a contact part. An area where the second pixel electrode exists on the uppermost layer of the TFT substrate is a main area. By a combination structure of the first pixel electrode and the second pixel electrode, the transmittance of the liquid crystal layer in the end area is made relatively higher than the transmittance in the main area.

Liquid crystal display device

A two-screen display device, in which an increase of production cost can be suppressed while the same resolution as an image of a usual (one-screen display) device is maintained, is provided. In a liquid crystal display panel of the two-screen display device, each of a first sub-pixel for first image and a second sub-pixel for second image has an aspect ratio of about 6:1. A source line supplies an image signal to both the first sub-pixel and the second sub-pixel. Each row of the sub-pixel includes a gate line (first gate line) that drives the first sub-pixel and a gate line (second gate line) that drives the second sub-pixel. An opening of a parallax barrier is disposed in a region between the first sub-pixel and the second sub-pixel.

Two-screen display device

In a multiple view liquid crystal display, occurrence of a reverse view phenomenon and a reverse view crosstalk are suppressed. A black matrix is formed on the opposed surface of a counter substrate to a TFT substrate in a liquid crystal panel, and a parallax barrier is provided on the black matrix with a gap layer having a predetermined thickness interposed therebetween. The black matrix includes a first light blocking part disposed immediately below an opening in the parallax barrier, and a second light blocking part with a portion immediate thereabove covered by the parallax barrier. The second light blocking part includes a low refractive-index film (reverse view preventive film), having a lower refractive index than that of a liquid crystal, at the end thereof which is in contact with a pixel opening between the second light blocking part and the adjacent first light blocking part.

In a liquid crystal display apparatus in which a liquid crystal layer is twist-aligned when no electric field is applied, &#x394;nd value of a liquid crystal layer in a wavelength of 550 nm is 300 to 400 nm, each of directions of polarizing axes of pair of linear polarizers is substantially parallel or vertical to the alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules in each end face of the liquid crystal layer that is closer to each of linear polarizers, and the angle between polarizing axes of the pair of linear polarizers is 85&#xb0; or larger and smaller than 90&#xb0;. In a liquid crystal display apparatus in which a liquid crystal layer is aligned to be substantially vertical when no electric field is applied, the angle between polarizing axes of the pair of linear polarizers is 85&#xb0; or larger and smaller than 90&#xb0;. In a liquid crystal display apparatus of a lateral electric field drive system, a uniaxial alignment angle of a liquid crystal layer when no electric field is applied is larger than &#x2212;45&#xb0; and &#x2212;40&#xb0; or smaller, or +40&#xb0; or larger and smaller than +45&#xb0;.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

A transverse electric field mode liquid crystal display device capable of improving the viewing angle characteristic in black display at an oblique viewing angle with a simple structure is provided. In the liquid crystal display device in accordance with one aspect of the present invention, (a) the product (&#x394;n&#xb7;d) of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a pair of substrates and the refractive index anisotropy &#x394;n of the liquid crystal layer is within the range of 320 nm&#xb1;20 nm, (b) each of the pair of polarizing plates is composed of a polarizer and transparent protective films sandwiching the polarizer therebetween, and the polarizing plate and the substrate are directly stuck together without any retardation film or optical compensation layer interposed therebetween, (c) the delay phase axis of the transparent protective film that protects the liquid crystal layer side is generally parallel with the absorption axis of the polarizer in each of the pair of polarizing plates, and (d) the in-plane retardation Re is equal to or less than 10 nm, and the retardation in thickness direction Rth is no less than 30 nm and no greater than 40 nm for the transparent protective film that protects the liquid crystal layer side in each of the pair of polarizing plates.

A transflective liquid crystal display device provided with columnar spacers is provided that can suppress variation in color tone of white in a reflective mode and can minimize degradation in reflectivity even when a coloring material used for a transmissive region and a coloring material used for a reflective region are the same. The device includes a color filter substrate, a TFT substrate, a liquid crystal material sandwiched by the color filter substrate and the TFT substrate, columnar spacers formed only in pixels having a green coloring material and defining a cell gap, and light-blocking portions provided only in predetermined regions in the vicinity of locations where the columnar spacers are formed.
