There is provided a flexible substrate having excellent flexibility and gas barrier properties. A flexible substrateaccording to the present invention includes: a base materialincluding an inorganic glassand resin layersand' placed on both sides of the inorganic glass; and an inorganic thin filmplaced on a side of one of the resin layers where the inorganic glass is not placed, wherein the inorganic thin filmis formed on at least a peripheral edge of one surface of the base material.

Flexible substrate

The present invention provides a transparent substrate that significantly prevents the progress of a crack in a thin-plate glass and the rupture of the glass, and is excellent in bending property and flexibility. A transparent substrate according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: a thin-plate glass having a thickness of 10 &#x3bc;m to 100 &#x3bc;m; and a resin layer on at least one side of the thin-plate glass, wherein a shrinkage stress of the resin layer on the thin-plate glass is 5 MPa or more.

A method of continuously subjecting an elongated substrate to vacuum film formation is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: feeding a first substrate from a first roll chamber in a first direction from the first roll chamber toward a second roll chamber; degassing the first substrate; forming a film of a second material on the first substrate, in a second film formation chamber; and rolling up the first substrate in the second roll chamber, thereby producing the first substrate, and comprises similar steps to produce a second substrate. In advance of producing the first substrate with the second material film, the first cathode electrode of the first film formation chamber is removed from the first film formation chamber, and, in advance of producing the second substrate with the first material film, the second cathode electrode of the second film formation chamber is removed from the second film formation chamber.

Vacuum film formation method and laminate obtained by the method

The film formation method comprises the steps of: unrolling and feeding an elongated substrate wound in a roll form from a first roll chamber in a direction from the first roll chamber toward a second roll chamber, using a first surface as a surface for film formation; degassing the fed substrate; forming a first material film on the first surface of the degassed substrate in a first film formation chamber; forming a second material film on the first material film in a second film formation chamber; taking up the substrate in a roll form in the second roll chamber, the substrate having the material films formed thereon; unrolling and feeding the taken up substrate from the first roll chamber in the direction, using a second surface opposite the first surface of the substrate as a surface for film formation; and repeating all the above treatments.

There is provided a substrate for a display device that has excellent gas barrier properties, flexibility, heat resistance and transparency, and has excellent dimensional stability, operability, and secondary processing characteristics. A substrate for a display device according to the present invention includes: an inorganic glass; and resin layers placed on both sides of the inorganic glass. Preferably, a ratio d/dbetween a total thickness dof the resin layer and a thickness dof the inorganic glass is 0.5 to 2.2. Preferably, the resin layers on both sides of the inorganic glass are each composed of the same material, each have the same thickness, and a thickness of each of the resin layers is equal to the thickness of the inorganic glass. Preferably, an average coefficient of linear expansion at 170&#xb0; C. of the substrate for a display device is 20 ppm &#xb0; C.or less.

Substrate for display device and method of manufacturing the same

An optical resin sheet includes a cured resin layer containing glass fiber, wherein the ratio of the elastic modulus of the glass fiber to the elastic modulus of a cured resin material, which forms the cured resin layer, is 25 or more. With the thus arranged optical resin sheet, stress is applied to the glass fiber, thereby reducing the phenomenon of occurrence of birefringence, and when it is applied to a display device, there is achieved a significantly small light leakage in an oblique direction. The optical resin sheet is capable of achieving excellent display quality of an image display device such as a liquid crystal display device, as well as keeping the coefficient of thermal expansion lower and the mechanical strength higher.

A resin sheet that is unlikely to be affected by heat and allows prevention of the occurrence of a crack is provided. A glass fiber cloth-like material is dipped into an epoxy resin solution and subjected to curing, thereby obtaining an epoxy resin-based sheet including the glass fiber cloth-like material. The resin sheet has a haze value of 10% or lower, and preferably, has a light transmittance of 88% or higher, an in-plane retardation of not more than 2 nm, a retardation in a thickness direction of 40 nm, and a surface roughness of not more than 2 &#x3bc;m.

Resin sheets containing dispersed particles and liquid crystal displays

An epoxy optical sheet comprising a hardened sheet of an epoxy resin and another resin layer formed on one side thereof. The sheet has a retardation of 5 nm or less, an average thickness of 500 &mgr;m or less, a thickness accuracy of &plusmn;10% or less, a glass transition temperature of 170&deg; C. or above, and a smooth surface. The epoxy optical sheet is made by a continuous process which comprises: successively forming a strippable resin layer on a support having a smooth surface; successively spreading an epoxy resin coating solution comprising an epoxy resin, a hardener, a hardening accelerator, and a leveling agent, on the resin layer in the form of a sheet; followed by a hardening treatment, thereby forming a hardened sheet adhering to the resin layer; and, at the same time, recovering the hardened sheet together with the resin layer from the support.
