A cylinder block is detachably connected to a transmission casing so that an engine and a transmission constitutes a single unit. A crankshaft is entirely supported on the cylinder block. A crankshaft gear is installed on the crankshaft at the nearly central portion thereof. An intermediate shaft with an idler gear and an idler shaft with an input gear are entirely supported on the transmission casing in such a way that the idler gear and input gear are meshed with each other. The crankshaft gear and idler gear are automatically meshed with each other when the cylinder block is installed in place on the transmission casing.

In order to supply a heat exchanger of the passenger room heating system with sufficiently heated liquid coolant of the boiling liquid engine cooling system, the coolant inlet conduit of the heat exchanger is connected to a coolant jacket of the engine at a position close to highly heated portions of the engine (such as, the combustion chamber walls, exhaust port walls or the like defined in the cylinder head of the engine).

Herein disclosed is a power plant structure which generally includes an engine part and a transmission part. In order to increase the rigidity of the power plant structure, the cylinder block of the engine is tightly connected by bolts to a mounting portion integrally formed on a transmission case. For more assured rigidity, a ladder beam structure is tightly disposed between the cylinder block and the mounting portion.

The present invention provides an evaporative cooling system for an automotive engine or the like which system does not require a plurality of electromagnetic valves and conduits and which can control the boiling point to a level appropriate for the instant mode of engine operation.

The cooling circuit of an internal combustion engine cooling system wherein the coolant is allowed to boil and the vapor used as a vehicle for removing heat from said engine is equipped with an external reservoir and arranged so that the amount of liquid coolant in the cooling circuit of the system can be varied in a manner which both assists in controlling the boiling point of the coolant and prevents the development of negative pressures which invite the invasion of non-condensible matter such as atmospheric air.

In order to accurately detect the coolant level in the coolant jacket of a cylinder head, a separate chamber member is mounted to the cylinder head and fluidly communicated with the coolant jacket of the cylinder head in a manner to contain therein the coolant by the same level as that in the coolant jacket, and a level sensor is mounted to the chamber member to detect the level of coolant contained in the chamber member.

In order to prevent large amounts of liquid coolant from boiling over from a coolant jacket of an evaporative cooling system wherein coolant vapor is used as a vehicle for removing heat from the engine to the condenser in which the coolant vapor is condensed, a vapor manifold is arranged to collect any liquid coolant before it reaches the radiator and return same to a relatively cool section of the coolant jacket.

In order to increase cabin space and simultaneously increase the amount of engine cooling which can be effected by natural air drafts which occur during forward running of the vehicle, the engine radiator is disposed on a forward portion of the vehicle roof and arranged to receive coolant vapor generated in the engine coolant jacket. The coolant is condensed and returned to the coolant jacket via a level sensor controlled pump in a manner which maintain the structure of the engine subject to high heat flux securely immersed in coolant. When the engine is stopped the negative pressure which develops due to the condensation of the vapor is used to induct coolant from a reservoir in a manner to fill the system and obviate any negative pressure which would otherwise tend to induct contamination atmospheric air thereinto. In the event that some non-condensible matter collects in the system, a purge function is provided which pumps excess coolant into the coolant jacket and radiator and flushes out any air or the like each time the engine is started with the coolant temperature below a predetermined level.

Cooling system for use in cab-over type vehicles

In an internal combustion engine cooling system wherein the coolant is boiled and the vapor produced condensed in a radiator in a manner that the rate of condensation under light engine load is maintained at a level sufficiently low to raise the pressure within the system and thus raise the boiling point of the coolant while under heavy load increased to the point of lowering the pressure in the system and thus lower the coolant boiling point, an arrangement is provided to reduce the heat exchange capacity of the radiator when the rate of condensation therein due to uncontrollable external influences becomes excessive. When the engine is stopped, coolant is admitted to fill the system. To purge any air or like non-condensible which finds its way into the system, liquid coolant is pumped in to overfill the system and flush same out during engine warm-up.

In order to avoid the need to provide auxiliary pumps and the like to obviate cavitation problems in the coolant return pump and the coolant jacket of an evaporative cooling type engine cooling system, a heater circulation pump which circulates heated coolant through a cabin heating circuit is selectively connected with a reservoir in which liquid coolant is stored and energized to pump fresh relatively cool coolant into the coolant jacket in the event that the normal coolant return pump is sensed as operating continuously for more than a predetermined period of time and thus ensure that the level of coolant in the coolant jacket is maintained at an appropriate level. Upon a positive pressure developing in the system a valve upstream of the coolant return pump is opened and hot coolant is displaced out to the reservoir. When a negative pressure develops the aforementioned valve is opened and fresh cool coolant from the reservoir is inducted into the system upstream of the pump to alleviate pump cavitation.

A small capacity pump continuously driven by a mechanical connection with the crankshaft or the like of the engine, is arranged to induct coolant from both the radiator wherein the coolant vapor is condensed to its liquid state and a liquid/vapor separator disposed in the vapor transfer conduit via which the coolant vapor is conveyed to the radiator from the coolant jacket. In order to maintain the cylinder head exhaust valves and ports immersed in a predetermined depth of liquid coolant a level sensor is disposed in the coolant jacket and the output used to open and close a valve fluidly interposed between the radiator and the pump. If required a second valve can be interposed between the pump and the separator and arranged to be closed when the first one is open.

Cooling system for automotive internal combustion engine or the like

In a boiling liquid engine cooling system which employs an electric fan for increasing the condensation function of a radiator (or condenser), there is employed a control means which restrains the rotation speed of the electric fan to a low level at the beginning of the fan rotation and thereafter gradually increases the rotation speed to the normal level as the time proceeds. With this, undesirable sudden violent boiling of liquid coolant in the coolant jacket is prevented.

Boiling liquid engine cooling system

In order to simplify the control and construction of the cooling system in a manner which avoids the need for costly electromagnetic valves and control circuits such as microprocessor and the like, a reservoir in which coolant is stored is arranged to constantly communicate with a lower portion of a cooling circuit which includes the coolant jacket and the radiator in which the coolant vapor is condensed. A small coolant pump returns condensate from the radiator to the coolant jacket in response to a temperature sensor disposed in the coolant jacket. An overflow conduit is arranged to return excess coolant pumped into the coolant jacket via a conduit which leads from an overflow port provided in the cylinder head at a predetermined height above highly heated structure of the engine to the base of the radiator and thus maintain a predetermined depth of liquid coolant in the jacket. A cooling fan or like device is operated in response to a second temperature sensor disposed at the bottom of the radiator.

A passenger cabin heating system incorporated with a boiling liquid cooled-combustion engine is disclosed, which comprises a first passage connected to the coolant jacket of the engine a heat exchanger connected to the first passage for receiving therein the gaseous coolant of the coolant jacket to achieve heat exchanging between the gaseous coolant in the condenser and air surrounding the condenser, and a second passage extending between the heat exchanger and the coolant jacket for recirculating the coolant thus liquefied in the heat exchanger back into the coolant jacket.
