A lighting device of the present disclosure includes a light source device and a reflective component. The reflective component reflects an illumination light incident from the light source device off the reflecting surface of the reflective component at incident angle &#x3b1;, and emits the illumination light reflected toward a display element at exit angle &#x3b2;. The reflecting surface of the reflective component is rotated with respect to two axes orthogonal to each other. 20 degrees&#x2264;|&#x3b1;&#x2212;&#x3b2;|&#x2264;60 degrees is satisfied. Where, each of the incident angle &#x3b1; and the exit angle &#x3b2; is angle of the illumination light to a horizontal direction of the display element when the illumination light is incident on a front surface of the display element.

Lighting device and projection display apparatus

A head-up display causes light modulated by an optical modulation element to form, via a projection lens, an intermediate image on a screen, and then causes the intermediate image to reflect, via a mirror, on a windshield to allow a user to view a virtual image. A normal line of the screen is inclined with respect to an optical axis of the projection lens. An emission surface of the optical modulation element is inclined with respect to the screen and a principal plane of the projection lens so as to satisfy a Scheimpflug condition.

Head-up display

A head-up display includes an image light output device for outputting image light, a first optical element, a second optical element, and a third optical element. The first optical element is provided to be inclined with respect to the output surface of the image light output device. The first optical element reflects the image light having a first polarization direction and allowing the image light having second polarization direction to pass through. The second optical element reflects the image light from the first optical element to the first optical element. The third optical element is disposed between the first and the second optical element, and converts the image light having the first polarization direction to the image light having the second polarization direction by allowing the image light to pass through back and forth. The image light passing through the first optical element is projected on a combiner.

A light source device and a projection type display apparatus include: an excitation light source; and a fluorescence light-emitting plate including a fluorescence light-emitting section arranged opposite to the excitation light source and a reflection section containing titanium oxide located on the opposite side of the excitation light source as viewed from the side of the fluorescence light-emitting section and arranged such as to be joined to the fluorescence light-emitting section. Then, excitation light from the excitation light source is projected onto the fluorescence light-emitting section so that fluorescence emission light is emitted from the fluorescence light-emitting section and reflected fluorescence light is emitted from the reflection section.

An image display device includes a plurality solid-state light sources, a modulator configured to modulate light from a plurality of solid-state light sources, and an image display device configured to generate from a frame of image data, a plurality of subframes each further divided into subfields, and to display the plurality of subframes. The modulator turns off light output from all the solid-state light sources for the duration of one or more of the plurality of subframes, whereby it is possible to reduce motion blur arising from a hold-type display device, in which after-images remain on the retina of a person's eyes when viewing moving objects.

Image display device

A projection display device that includes: a light source unitthat includes a discharge lampas a light source; an image formation unit; a projection optical system; and a light source cooling unit that cools the light source unit. The light source unit is disposed so that a lamp axis that connects two discharge electrodes of the discharge lamp is orthogonal to a projecting direction of the projection optical system, and the light source unit includes: a concave mirror; and a transparent partthat covers an opening of the concave mirror. The light source cooling unit includes: a blowing fan that supplies cooling air; a plurality of air blowing portsanddisposed at the concave mirror or a connecting part that connects the concave mirror and the transparent part; an air ductthat connects the air blowing ports and the blowing fan; a branch switching valvethat is disposed in the air duct and switches between a plurality of branch flow paths so as to allow the cooling air to flow therethrough; and a control valve that is provided for each of the air blowing ports and rotated around a supporting axis by the action of gravity depending on a posture of the light source cooling unit, thereby controlling a wind direction so that the cooling air is blown from above the discharge lamp. The top of the light source lamp is cooled effectively regardless of the installation posture of the projection display device.

A lighting device is provided which efficiently achieves a high brightness and a high image quality by using a solid light source which has long service life and does not need mercury. The lighting device includes a first light source section, a second light source section, a second rod integrator for combining lights emitted from the first and second light source sections, and a first rod integrator for guiding the light from the first light source section, to the second rod integrator. On an incident surface of the second rod integrator, a first region on which the light emitted from the first light source section is incident and a second region on which the light emitted from the second light source section is incident do not overlap each other, and the surface area of the first region and the surface area of the second region are different from each other.

Lighting device with plural light sources illuminating distinct regions of integrator

A lighting device configured to efficiently combine light beams emitted from a plurality of light sources, and to emit high output light while minimizing light loss, and a projection type display apparatus including the lighting device. The lighting device includes: a first light source and a second light source; two converging lenses for converging light beams emitted from the first and second light sources; two right-angle prisms for bending the light beams emitted from the first and second light sources; and a composite rod integrator for combining the light beams emitted from the first and second light sources. Between an exit surface of each right-angle prism and an incident surface of the composite rod integrator, a predetermined air gap is provided. The focal point of each converging lens is located on an incident surface of each right-angle prism.

Lighting device and projection type display apparatus including the same

Red, green, and blue laser light emitted from laser light sources-is transformed into substantially parallel beams by collimator lenses-, collected by microlens arrays-, and rendered uniform by rod integrators-, whereupon it is used to illuminate spatial light modulation elements-and subjected to modulation. The modulated laser light exiting from the spatial light modulation elements-is recombined using a beam-combining prismand subjected to pixel separation using a birefringent plate, which is rotationally driven by a birefringent plate rotary drive unit, after which it is projected upon a screenusing a projection optical system. The birefringent platespatially separates the modulated laser light using birefringence. When pixels are spatially separated by the birefringent plate, the pixel grid region is made smaller, the distribution of brightness on the screen is rendered uniform, and speckle noise is reduced.

A projection type display apparatus includes: a rotary color filterhaving color filtersR,G andB that transmit particular colors of light of white light emitted from a light-emitting surface; a spatial light modulatorthat is disposed so as to be in substantially a conjugate relationship with the light-emitting surface, and modulates incident light from the rotary color filter, so as to display an image; and a control devicethat controls rotation of the rotary color filter so as to be in synchronization with the image display by the spatial light modulator. With respect to partial display regions, . . . of the spatial light modulator that correspond respectively to partial light-emitting regions, . . . defined by dividing the light-emitting surface, the control device switches each of the partial display regions, . . . between a normal image display state and an OFF state for cutting off light, in synchronization with passing of boundary linesandbetween each pair of adjacent ones of the color filters of the rotary color filter over each of the partial light-emitting regions, . . . . Thus, the efficiency of using illumination light by the spatial light modulator is improved, and it is possible to achieve an increased color luminance of a projected image, while sufficiently maintaining an effect of preventing color mixing from being caused by adjoining color filters.

The laser picture formation device includes a two-dimensional modulation element performing video image modulation as well as four or more laser light sources having different center wavelengths. The video images which have no speckle noises at the wavelength region that has high visibility, which are realized by simultaneously emitting the laser lights of green (G) and yellowish green (Y) which have particularly high visibility, and video images which are vivid as cannot be represented by the conventional display, and which can be realized by controlling the laser lights of respective colors independently, can be displayed. Particularly, by modulating the two-dimensional modulation element and the laser light output with synchronized with each other, various video displays are enabled.
