The present invention is directed to a method for manufacturing a high-pressure discharge lamp including: a spherical portion forming a light-emitting portion (); sealing portions that are connected with both ends of the spherical portion; an electrode () that is sealed to each of the sealing portions; and a metal foil () that is connected with a rear end of each electrode. A vessel provided with a cylindrical glass tube () on both ends of the spherical portion is used, a connection structure of the metal foil and the electrode are disposed in the glass tube such that a front end of the electrode is positioned in the spherical portion, and the glass tube is melted by heat and shrunk for sealing the metal foil and the electrode so as to form the sealing portion. An inner diameter &#x3c6; of the glass tube before the heat-melt processing and a distance L from an edge of the metal foil to the internal space of the spherical portion are set to satisfy a relationship of L/&#x3c6;&#x2267;1.35, a corner of an edge portion of the metal foil on a side of the connection with the electrode is cut so as to form a wedge shape (), and subsequently the sealing step is performed. Thereby, it can suppress the generation of the breakage during the lighting life span, which is caused by a gap generated from the metal foil to an axis of the electrode during the sealing processing of the high-pressure discharge lamp having a high brightness property.

A long-life high-pressure discharge lamp can (i) suppress damage to sealing portions, especially at an initial stage of the accumulated lighting time, (ii) allow for easy assembly of components such as electrodes and (iii) prevent deformation/ripping of metallic foils. An arc tube is a glass enveloping vessel with electrodes arranged therein, and includes: a light emitting portion in which materials are enclosed and a discharge space is formed; and sealing portions provided at ends of the light emitting portion. The second end of each electrode bar is partially wrapped around by a sleeve-like metallic cover foil that has a cut-out section positioned over a joining area where the second end of each electrode bar is joined to the metallic foil.

A high-pressure mercury lamp is provided that includes a transparent envelope made of quartz glass, in which mercury, halogen, and a rare gas are sealed and a pair of electrodes provided in the transparent envelope. The amount of the halogen sealed in the transparent envelope is in the range from 1.0&#xd7;10&#x3bc;mol/mmto 1.0&#xd7;10&#x3bc;mol/mm, and 2.5 mol % to 25 mol % of oxygen with respect to the amount of the halogen is present in the transparent envelope. In another aspect, the amount of &#x2014;OH in the glass of the discharge tube is less than 3 ppm. In a further aspect, the discharge lamp has a restriking voltage of less than 20 V.

A short-arc high-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp includes a pair of electrodes in an arc tube and encloses mercury, a rare gas, and so forth in the arc tube. Thus, a lamp is constructed having, even with a relatively low lamp voltage, a high lamp power of, for example, 125 W or higher, having a short arc length and a high luminous flux per unit arc length, and furthermore being one in which damage to the arc tube does not occur.
