A failure determination device capable of performing failure determination for a shutter device of a vehicle with accuracy in a short time period. In an engine room of a vehicle, a condenser for a refrigeration cycle for an aircon is provided and at a front grille of the vehicle, a grille shutter device is provided for introducing ambient air for cooling the condenser into the engine room by opening a grille shutter. According to the failure determination device of the shutter device, a pressure of the refrigerant discharged from the condenser is detected as a refrigerant pressure. A failure of the grille shutter device is determined based on the refrigerant pressure, which changes at a large rate according to the opening/closing of the grille shutter, enabling failure determination with accuracy in a short time period.

The characteristics of the output of an exhaust gas sensor with respect to the air-fuel ratio of an engine are expressed by a nonlinear function such as a quadratic function or the like, and the parameters of the nonlinear function are sequentially identified according to a sequential identifying algorithm using the data of the output of the exhaust gas sensor and the data of the output of an air-fuel ratio sensor which detects the air-fuel ratio of the engine. An air-fuel ratio at which the function value of the nonlinear function whose parameters have been identified is used as a target air-fuel ratio, and the air-fuel ratio of the engine is controlled at the target air-fuel ratio.

A deterioration of a catalytic converter for purifying an exhaust gas produced by burning a mixture of a fuel and air in an internal combustion engine, for example, is judged by supplying the exhaust gas to the catalytic converter, detecting the amount of a predetermined component of the exhaust gas which has passed through the catalytic converter with an exhaust gas sensor disposed downstream of the catalytic converter, calculating a target air-fuel ratio for the exhaust gas to be supplied to the catalytic converter for achieving a predetermined emission purifying capability of the catalytic converter based on a detected output signal from the exhaust gas sensor, and judging a deteriorated state of the catalytic converter based on the calculated target air-fuel ratio.

There is provided a catalyst deterioration-detecting system for an internal combustion engine having at least one catalyst arranged in the exhaust passage, for purifying noxious components present in exhaust gases emitted from the engine, and an exhaust gas component concentration sensor arranged in the exhaust passage at a location downstream of the catalyst, for detecting concentration of a specific component in the exhaust gases. An ECU of the system controls the ignition timing of the engine, and detects the degree of deterioration of the catalyst, based on an output value from the exhaust gas component concentration sensor. The ignition timing of the engine is retarded in dependence on the detected degree of deterioration of the catalyst.

Catalyst deterioration-detecting system for internal combustion engines

A control system for an internal combustion engine comprises an ECU which calculates an amount of fuel to be supplied to the engine and determines a direct supply ratio and a carry-off ratio, based on operating conditions of the engine. The direct supply ratio is a ratio of a fuel amount directly drawn into the engine in a predetermined operating cycle of the engine to the whole fuel amount injected in the same operating cycle, and the carry-off ratio is a ratio of a fuel amount carried off the inner surface of the intake pipe and drawn into the engine in the predetermined operating cycle to the whole fuel amount which adhered to the inner surface of the intake pipe in an operating cycle immediately preceding the predetermined operating cycle. An adherent fuel amount which is to adhere to the intake pipe inner surface in the predetermined operating cycle is estimated based on the direct supply ratio and the carry-off ratio, and the carried-off fuel amount is estimated based on the direct supply ratio and the adherent fuel amount. The supply fuel amount is corrected based on the estimated adherent fuel amount and carried-off fuel amount, and then the corrected fuel amount is injected into the engine. The direct supply ratio and the carry-off ratio are corrected when the two ratios are in a predetermined relationship.

A fuel supply mechanism for a gas combustion engine has a tank filled with a gas fuel, a fuel injector having a fuel injection valve mounted on the gas combustion engine, a pipe for supplying the gas fuel from the tank to the fuel injector, a gas fuel cutoff valve in the pipe for cutting off the gas fuel flowing through the pipe, a gas fuel state detector for detecting a state of the gas fuel, and a control unit responsive to a detected signal from the gas fuel state detector for controlling the gas fuel cutoff valve and the fuel injection valve.

The ignition timing control system comprises an ECU which detects whether the engine has been recovered from a fuel cut state to a fuel supply state, and calculates ignition timing of the engine, based on operating conditions of the engine detected by engine operating parameter sensors, including pressure within the intake passage. A retard amount by which the ignition timing is to be retarded is calculated based on the detected operating conditions of the engine when it is detected that the engine has been recovered from the fuel cut state to the fuel supply state. Further, the ignition timing is corrected based on the calculated retard amount.

Ignition timing control system for internal combustion engines

An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine controls an amount of fuel supplied to the engine. Operating conditions of the engine, including engine rotational speed and intake pressure, are detected. Also detected is a valve opening of a recirculation control valve arranged in an exhaust recirculation passage, for controlling recirculation of exhaust gases. An amount of recirculation gas is determined based on a detected value of the valve opening of the recirculation control valve. A fuel supply amount is calculated based on the engine rotational speed and the intake pressure. The fuel supply amount is corrected based on the amount of recirculation gas determined.
