This invention provides a method for forming a catalyst layer for carbon nanostructure growth, which can eliminate the influence of water in a liquid for catalyst layer formation, can grow homogeneous and highly oriented carbon nanostructures over the whole area of a substrate and can realize mass production of the carbon nanostructures, and a liquid for catalyst layer formation for use in the method, and a process for producing carbon nanostructures using the catalyst layer formed by the method. The catalyst layer for use in the production of CNTs is formed by preparing a catalyst metal salt solution of a catalyst metal-containing metal compound (a catalyst metal salt) dispersed or dissolved in a solvent having an ample wettability towards the substrate and coating the catalyst metal salt solution onto the substrate to a form a thin film. The thin film is then heat treated to form a catalyst layer. The substrate with the dried catalyst layer formed thereon is introduced into a carbon nanostructure synthetic device, and CNTs are grown by a thermal CVD method.

It is intended to highly efficiently produce a high-density brush shaped carbon nanostructure useful in the production of CNT assembly, such as rope-shaped CNTs, and provide a catalyst body for production of brush-shaped carbon nanostructure that enables the production. A method for synthesizing carbon nanocoils with high efficiency, by determining the structure of carbon nuclei that have been attached to the ends of carbon nanocoils and thus specifying a true catalyst for synthesizing carbon nanocoils is implemented. The catalyst for synthesizing carbon nanocoils according to the present invention is a carbide catalyst that contains at least elements (a transition metal element, In, C) or (a transition metal element, Sn, C), and in particular, it is preferable for the transition metal element to be Fe, Co or Ni. In addition to this carbide catalyst, a metal catalyst of (Fe, Al, Sn) and (Fe, Cr, Sn) are effective. From among these, catalysts such as FeInC, FeInCSnw and FeSnC are particularly preferable. The wire diameter and the coil diameter can be controlled by using a catalyst where any of these catalysts is carried by a porous carrier.

Method for high-efficiency synthesis of carbon nanostructure

A material gas and a catalyst are introduced through a material supplying tube path and a catalyst supplying tube path together with a carrier gas into a reactor equipped on its outer periphery with a heat applicator for thermally decomposing the material gas. The reactor has a convention regulator fitted to the discharge end of the catalyst supplying tube path. The convection regulator covers an edge side of the reactor to regulate gas flow in the reactor so that the flow does not reach the edge side. Due to this, a convection state can be efficiently produced in a reaction region. Consequently, it becomes possible to prevent contamination defect caused by accumulation/adherence of concretion of catalyst, which was generated by aggregation of cooled catalyst in the low-temperature region of the reactor and a decomposition product of the material gas. Thus the efficiency of carbon nanostructure production can be improved.

The present invention realizes a nanotube probe with high durability that can be manufactured in short time with less impurities adhered to the holder sustaining the nanotube. The nanotube probe according to this invention is constructed by fastening a nanotubeon the protruded portionof a cantilever by way of at least two partial coating filmsand. One or more additional partial coating films may be formed in the intermediate area between these two partial coating films. Each partial coating film is formed by irradiating electron beamon the position where the nanotubeis in contact with the protruded portionof the cantilever. The partial coating films are separated not to overlap each other. By minimizing the size of partial coating film as well as by narrowing down the beam diameter, coating time may be further shortened. With the beam diameter narrowed down, excessive deposit of impurities can be put under control.

Nanotube probe and a method for manufacturing the same

A catalyst for manufacturing carbon substances, such as carbon nanotube that has a diameter of 1000 nm or less, the catalyst containing at least iron, cobalt or nickel of a first element group and tin or indium of a second element group. The catalyst can be formed by at least tin and indium in addition to cobalt or nickel. The former catalyst provides a 2-component type catalyst and a multi-component type catalyst that is composed on the basis of the 2-component type catalyst, and the later catalyst provides a 3-component type catalyst and a multi-component type catalyst that is composed on the basis of the 3-component type catalyst.

A scanning microscope probe in which a palladium covering film is formed on the surface of the protruding portion of a cantilever, and the base end portion of a nanotube is disposed in contact with the palladium covering film with the tip end portion of the nanotube protruding to the outside, thus allowing the tip end to be used as a probe needle end for detecting signals. A coating film is formed to cover all or part of the surface of this base end portion, and the nanotube is thus firmly fastened to the cantilever. Since the base end portion adheres tightly to the palladium covering film, both of them are electrically continuous. This palladium covering film allows, as an electrode film, the application of a voltage to the nanotube or the passage of an electric current through the nanotube, showing also good adhesion to the nanotube and cantilever.

A nanotube probe assembled under real-time observation inside an electron microscope, the probe including a nanotube; a holder for holding the nanotube; and a fastening means for fastening the nanotube at a base end portion thereof to the holder; and the tip end portion of the nanotube protrudes from the holder. A heat emitting probe including a conductive nanotube probe needle with its base end fastened to a holder and its tip end protruded, a heat emitting body formed on the probe needle, a conductive nanotube lead wire fastened to the heat emitting body, and an electric current supply that causes an electric current to pass through the conductive nanotube lead wire and both ends of the probe needle. The tip end of the probe needle is thus heated by an electric current flowing through the heat emitting body. A heat emitting probe apparatus includes the above-described heat emitting probe, a scanning mechanism that allows the heat emitting probe to scan over a thermal recording medium, and a control circuit that causes the tip end of the probe needle to emit heat, thus recording extremely small hole patterns in the surface of a thermal recording medium.
