A water lubricated bearing or water lubricated seal using water as a lubricant. The bearing or seal has: a rotary member secured directly or indirectly to a rotary side, and a stationary member secured directly or indirectly to a stationary side and facing the rotary member for making sliding contact therewith. A substrate of either one of the rotary member and the stationary member is a metallic material and a thin titanium nitride film is formed on the sliding surface thereof. The other member is made of a non-brittle material or a film of hard material is formed on the sliding surface thereof. Thereby, a coefficient of friction of the bearing or seal is reduced and a wear resistance of the same is improved.

Water lubricated machine component having contacting sliding surfaces

A seal or bearing comprising a combination of a movable member and a stationary member, either one of the movable and stationary members being made of a low thermal expansion coefficient material, and the other being made of a carbon containing material, wherein a sliding surface of the movable or stationary member which is made of the low thermal expansion coefficient material is irradiated with an ion beam consisting essentially of nitrogen ions at the same time as titanium is vacuum-deposited on the sliding surface, thereby forming a thin titanium nitride film on the sliding surface, which provide a seal or bearing which has a reduced coefficient of friction, and which is improved in wear resistance.

Seal or bearing

A noncontacting face seal has a stationary sealing ring and a rotating sealing ring with opposed radially extending sealing surfaces for restricting a fluid flow from a high pressure fluid side to a low pressure fluid side. The rotating sealing ring is moved out of contact with the stationary sealing ring due to hydrostatic force from the fluid. The noncontacting face seal comprises spiral grooves formed in one of the sealing surfaces and extending from a low pressure fluid side to a high pressure fluid side in a radial direction so as to pump fluid from the low pressure fluid side towards the high pressure fluid side, and a spaced portion formed in one of the sealing surfaces and extending inwardly from one circumference of the sealing surface at the high pressure fluid side so as to introduce fluid in the high pressure fluid side between the sealing surfaces.

Noncontacting face seal

A spiral groove face seal has a stationary sealing ring and a rotating sealing ring with opposed radially extending sealing surfaces for restricting fluid flow from a high pressure fluid side to a low pressure fluid side. The rotating sealing ring is in contact with the stationary sealing ring at at least a part of the sealing surfaces when the rotating ring is stopped, and the rotating ring is moved out of contact with the stationary sealing ring when the rotating sealing ring is rotated. The spiral groove face seal comprises spiral grooves formed on one of the sealing surfaces and extending from one circumference of the sealing surface in a radial direction and from the high pressure fluid side to the low pressure fluid side so as to pump fluid from the high pressure fluid side towards the low pressure fluid side. A recess is formed on one of the sealing surfaces coincident with or opposite to at least a portion of the area in which the spiral grooves are formed.

Spiral groove face seal

A thrust bearing contructed to comprise a pair of disc elements one of which is arranged to rotate and the other of which is kept stationary, the surface of the rotating side opposing the stationary element being provided with a pattern of spiral grooves which are non-reflective while the remaining lands of the pattern are reflective so that a pulsed light beam is reflected from the pattern when a light beam is directed onto the rotating pattern through a hole provided in the stationary element, the reflected light pulses being utilized for determining the rotational speed of the element under rotation.
