A valve timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine has a lock pin that is movably provided in an accommodation hole of one of vanes of a rotor. A screw portion is formed along part of the outer circumference of the lock pin, which is fixed to a shaft of a motor. When hydraulic pressure control is performed to maintain a housing and the rotor in a predetermined intermediate phase, the lock pin moves in the axial direction of a cam shaft in response to rotation of the motor independently of the hydraulic pressure control, and engages a lock recess portion formed in a sprocket.

During a course of stopping an engine, the oil pressure in a timing advance-side hydraulic chamber and the oil pressure in a timing retard-side hydraulic chamber of a variable valve timing mechanism are adjusted so that the relative rotation phase of an intake camshaft changes to the timing advanced side of a phase (predetermined advanced state) corresponding to the engine start-up timing. After the relative rotation phase has changed to the advanced side of the predetermined advanced state, the duty ratio D, that is, a control quantity used to adjust the oil pressure, is fixed to a value that holds the relative rotation phase.

A method of manufacturing a connecting rod for a piston engine in which the inner surface of the small hole of the connecting rod is milled to produce a multifaceted surface which includes two deep spot faces along each edge of the small hole and two tapered faces. This milling step yields thin edge regions along each edge of the small hole to serve as a process reference hole with process reference planes. The final step, according to the method of this invention, is to remove the thin edge regions with a rotating cutting tool, thus exposing the tapered faces to serve as chamfered edges without any significant production of burs or distortion of the connecting rod.
