A shift operation apparatus for an outboard motor of the present invention comprises a case fixed to an outboard motor, a motor provide at the case, a worm gear which is rotated by the motor, a worm wheel engages with the worm gear, an output shaft provided so as to freely rotate, a gear mechanism which transmits rotation of the worm wheel to the output shaft, an output arm which is attached to the output shaft, and which moves a range from a shift forward position to a shift reverse position with a neutral position being a boundary, a sensor which outputs a signal relating to a shift position of the output arm to a control circuit, and a force transmitting member whose one end is connected to the output arm, and whose other end is connected to a portion to be operated of a shift mechanism.

A remote control device comprises a portable housing, control levers, steering knob, locking mechanisms, selector switch, indicators, emergency stop switch, etc. The locking mechanisms can hold the control levers in a neutral position. The housing contains therein potentiometers adapted to deliver electric signal for engine control when the control levers are moved back and forth and a potentiometer adapted to deliver electric signal for driving a steering mechanism when the steering knob is moved from side to side.

Each of control boxes has an operation lever and an element moving together with the operation lever and a primary sensor for detecting the position of the moving element are arranged in each of the control boxes. A drive unit includes a motor, a movable rack driven by the motor and a secondary sensor for detecting the position of the moving rack. A control circuit serves to drive the motor to make any positional difference of the moving element and the movable rack zero. In a case where the position of the moving element does not coincide with that of the movable rack even after a predetermined time period goes by from when the rotation of the motor is started, current supply to the motor is temporarily stopped and then again started. When the control boxes are to be changed over from one to the other, this changeover is allowed only in a case where the control boxes which are to be changed over from one to the other and the drive unit are in neutral position. The drive unit includes a manual gear which can be toothed with the movable rack, and a handle for rotating the manual gear when something wrong happens to the electric system.

Engine control device

A body has a guide members extending along the axis of the body. A pair of racks held by the body are movable along the guide members. The first rack is connected to a first remote control unit through a first cable. The second rack is connected to a second remote control unit through a second cable. When one of the first and second racks is moved from a reference position, the lock members locks the movement of the other rack. An intermediate gear is arranged between the first and second racks. An interlocking member is connected to the intermediate gear. When one rack is moved, the intermediate gear is moved in the same direction as the moved rack. The movement of the intermediate gear is transmitted to equipment to be controlled through the interlocking member.
