A resonance detection device is provided for detecting resonance in an exhaust passage of an automotive vehicle. The detection device employs a temperature sensor in combination with an arrangement which enables the sensor to be exposed to a flow of exhaust gas the temperature of which is different from the temperature of the bulk of the flow, when resonance occurs. In given embodiments the arrangement takes the form different diameter conduits and/or vessels, while others it takes the form of a heat exchange device which either heats or cools the gases, and which is disposed proximate the temperature sensor. When no resonance occurs in the passage, the output of the temperature sensor remains stable. When resonance occurs the fluid flow characteristics in the passage change in a manner wherein the gas which has been either heated or cooled by the heat exchange device is induced to flow against the temperature sensor. The sensed temperature change can be used to control a valve via which the resonance characteristics of the passage are modified and via which resonance is attenuated.

A transmission housing for an automotive vehicle, comprises a bell housing made of light alloy and connected at its front end section to an engine block, and a lip supporting member made of steel and securely attached to bell housing front end section, along the periphery thereof, thereby preventing the bell housing from vibratingly deforming in its radial direction so as to reduce noise radiated therefrom.

An automotive internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder block having at its bottom section a plurality of main bearing supporting sections, a bearing beam structure secured to the cylinder block bottom section and including a plurality of main bearing caps each cooperating with a main bearing supporting section of the cylinder block, and a beam section securely connecting the main bearing caps with each other, and a support arm disposed on an end portion of the bearing beam structure and rigidly connected to the lower section of a transmission bell housing, thereby effectively suppressing the angular displacement of the cylinder block relative to the transmission bell housing.

An internal combustion engine having a cylinder block, comprises a bearing support beam structure secured to the cylinder block and including a plurality of main bearing carrying sections which are made of aluminum allow and incorporate with the corresponding sections of the cylinder block to rotatably support a crankshaft, and a steel pipe securely disposed within and in a manner to pierce the main bearing carrying sections, thereby lightening the weight of the entire engine, increasing the flexural rigidity of the cylinder block.

Low noise level internal combustion engine

A vacuum motor operatively connected to a slave cylinder operates same via pressure differential variations across a reciprocatable vacuum motor piston to pump working fluid from a reservoir to an accumulator through two one way valves. The pressure differential variation can be derived from gear changing of the vehicle, induced through a three way electromagnetic valve controlled by a circuit characterized by either an unstable multivibrator, a dual stable multivibrator, a thyristor or a self maintaining relay, or induced through a purely mechanically operated valve characterized by lost motion and snap action position maintain devices. A pressure relief valve may be provided which dumps excessive pressurized fluid in the accumulator and returns same to the reservoir.

A pressure bumper or buffer is connected to a passageway between a pump and an oscillating type of flow rate meter for eliminating or alleviating a pulsation of the pressure of a pressurized fluid generated in the passageway by the pump to prevent the flow rate meter from failing to sense the real value of the flow rate of fluid fed to fluid consuming means.
