Provided is a polylactic-acid-containing aqueous dispersion capable of forming a transparent film at room temperature. A polylactic-acid-containing aqueous dispersion contains (1) polylactic acid; (2) at least one plasticizer selected from the group consisting of dimethyl adipate, diethyl adipate, dipropyl adipate, diisopropyl adipate, dibutyl adipate, diallyl adipate, bis(2-butoxyethyl) adipate, bis(2-methoxyethyl) adipate, dimethyl succinate, dimethyl glutarate, diethyl sebacate, diisopropyl sebacate, and mixtures thereof; (3) at least one dispersion stabilizer selected from the group consisting of cationic polymers, anionic polymers, polyvinyl alcohols, and non-ionic surfactants; and (4) water.

The invention provides a method for producing a transgenic plant, as well as the plant produced from the method and the progeny of the plant. The method comprises transforming a cell of a plant with an exogenous spermidine synthase coding sequence, expressing the exogenous spermidine synthase coding sequence in the transformed cell, and generating a plant from the transformed cell. The transgenic plant has improved environmental stress tolerance against at least two environmental stresses selected from drought stress, herbicidal stress, oxidation stress, cold stress, osmotic stress, and salt stress as compared to a plant of the same species lacking the exogenous spermidine synthase coding sequence.

Cotton plants of the genuswith improved cotton fiber characteristics are disclosed. The cotton plant has an expression cassette containing a gene coding for an enzyme selected from the group consisting of endoxyloglucan transferase, catalase and peroxidase so that the gene is expressed in cotton fiber cells to improve the cotton fiber characteristics. Also disclosed is a method for producing cotton fibers with improved fiber characteristics from these cotton plants.

Cotton plants of the genus Gossypium with improved cotton fiber characteristics are disclosed. The cotton plant has an expression cassette containing a gene coding for an enzyme selected from the group consisting of endoxyloglucan transferase, catalase and peroxidase so that the gene is expressed in cotton fiber cells to improve the cotton fiber characteristics. Also disclosed is a method for producing cotton fibers with improved fiber characteristics from these cotton plants.

Methods are disclosed to achieve an improvement in the characteristics and yield of cotton fibers. In one method, a cotton plant of the genus Gossypium in seed form or in growth stage is treated with a brassinosteroid. In another method, an ovule culture is prepared from a cotton plant of the genus Gossypium in a brassinosteroid-containing liquid medium. Cotton fibers with improved fiber characteristics are obtained from the cotton bolls of the treated plant or from the cultured ovules. Also disclosed are a method for inducing specific genes expression in a cotton plant to produce cotton fibers with improved fiber characteristics by treatment with a brassinosteroid, and a cotton plant produced by this method; as well as a novel gene capable of changing the degree of its expression found in the ovules of a cotton plant treated with a brassinosteroid, a gene capable of hybridizing with this novel gene, a recombinant plasmid containing this novel gene, a transformant containing this recombinant plasmid, and the like.

Production of cotton fiber with improved fiber characteristics

Novel plant promoters isolated from cotton fiber tissues are provided. The plant promoters are located upstream cotton plant genes KC03, KC18, KC22, and Gh3, all of which are expressed in cotton fibers, and contain (a) DNA having the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:1, 6, 11, or 16. Also provided are plant expression vectors prepared by introducing the plant promoters into appropriate vectors; transformed plant cells prepared by introducing the plant expression vectors into host plant cells; transformed plants regenerated from the transformed plant cells; transformed plant seeds obtained from the transformed plants; and processes for producing transformed plants from the plant seeds.

One of the genes was first derived from a cotton plant of the genus Gossypium and found to change the degree of its expression by treatment with a brassinosteroid.
