Provided is a catalyst composition for the isomerization of n-paraffin which comprises a &#x3b2;-zeolite having been synthesized according to a dry gel process and contains cerium, the &#x3b2;-zeolite being characterized in that it has an average particle diameter of 0.01&#x2dc;0.1 &#x3bc;m and the proportion of the cerium in the &#x3b2;-zeolite is within the range of 0.001&#x2dc;0.2 in terms of the atomic ratio of the silicon atom in the &#x3b2;-zeolite to the cerium atom, i.e. [Ce]/[Si] as well as a process for isomerizing n-paraffin which comprises bringing n-paraffin into contact with the catalyst composition as set forth above.

A process is provided for preparing zeolite, particularly &lsqb;Al&rsqb;-SSZ-31, which comprises the steps of providing a mixture of a zeolite source, an aluminum-containing material, an organic structure directing substance, preferably at least one selected from the group consisting of N,N&prime;-bis-triethyl-1,6-hexanediyl-diammonium dihydroxide, N,N&prime;-bis-triethyl-1,7-heptanediyl-diammonium dihydroxide, N,N&prime;-bis-triethyl-1,8-octanediyl-diammonium dihydroxide, N,N&prime;-bis-triethyl-1,9-nonanediyl-diammonium dihydroxide, N,N&prime;-bis-triethyl-1,10-decanediyl-diammonium dihydroxide, and their salts, and water; drying said mixture to form a powdered dry gel; and contacting and reacting said dry gel with steam at a saturated vapor pressure to produce an aluminum-containing zeolite &lsqb;Al&rsqb;-SSZ-31.
