A tire wear measurement device detects a magnetic field of a magnetic body embedded in a tread portion of a tire and measures the degree of wear of the tire from a change in the magnetic field. The tire wear measurement device includes a first magnetic field detection portion placed at a position at which the magnetic field of the magnetic body can be detected, and a second magnetic field detection portion disposed at a position at which the intensity of the magnetic field of the magnetic body differs from the intensity at the position at which the first magnetic field detection portion is disposed.

A magnetoresistive element includes a meandering X-axis array that is constituted by X-axis segments alternately connected, and a meandering Y-axis array that is constituted by Y-axis segments alternately connected. When rotated 90&#xb0;, the Y-axis array has the same layout as the X-axis array. Such a structure cancels the electrical resistance change due to the AMR effect, thus reducing the waveform distortion of output voltage.

First and second GMR devices formed in a first block and fifth and sixth GMR devices formed in a third block are disposed in a symmetrical manner as to a point of origin. The first and fifth GMR devices, and the second and sixth GMR devices are disposed in a symmetrical manner as to the point of origin, and accordingly the intensity and direction of an external magnetic field applied from a rotating magnet is the equal between the first and fifth GMR devices, and also equal between the second and sixth GMR devices. Thus, combining the first, fifth, second, and sixth GMR devices to form a Wheatstone bridge circuit enables detection precision of rotation angles to be improved.

The seat position sensor includes a housing, a magnetoelectric converting element which performs changeover of an output at a given magnetic field intensity, and a magnet which is held by the housing at a position where the magnet faces the magnetoelectric converting element in an opposed manner. A shielding plate is capable of entering into or exiting from a space defined between the magnetoelectric converting element and the magnet. An inverse bias magnet which applies a magnetic field of an inverse direction to the magnet is provided to a side opposite to the magnet side while sandwiching the magnetoelectric converting element therebetween.

In a magnetic impedance device according to the present invention, an approximately uniformly biased magnetic field is applied to a sensing part of a magnetic wire in a longitudinal direction by setting the range of winding of a coil. The sensing part is composed of magnetic material with high permeability and is disposed between a pair of mounting pins. The coil is wound around the sensing part of the magnetic wire and generates a biasing magnetic field. The range of winding of the coil is longer than the sensing part. This arrangement allows the sensing part of the magnetic wire to detect external magnetic fields without problems caused by edge effects from the ends of the coil, thereby enhancing the precision of detection.
