A detector, that prevents erroneous detection of a foreign object caught in a window glass when the engine of a vehicle is being operated and when the engine is stopped using a relatively simple control method. The detector includes a pulse sensor for detecting rotational speed of a motor. A microcomputer calculates a cycle difference sum based on the rotational speed of the motor. The microcomputer compares the cycle difference sum with a obstruction determination threshold to determine whether a foreign object has been caught. The microcomputer detects whether the engine is stopped. When detecting that the engine is stopped, the microcomputer changes the obstruction determination threshold so that the probability of the microcomputer determining that a foreign object has been caught is lower than that when the engine is being operated.

A magnesium alloy of the present invention includes magnesium as a main component, boron of 0.0005 weight % or more, manganese of 0.03 to 1 weight %, and substantially no zirconium or titanium. This magnesium alloy may further include aluminum of 1 to 30 weight % and/or zinc of 0.1 to 20 weight %. Because of appropriate amounts of boron and manganese contained in the magnesium alloy, the grain of the mangnesium alloy is refined.

A method of removing scale in a cooling water system in which scale is formed comprises adding 0.01 weight % or more based on the total amount of water contained in the cooling water system of a copolymer containing vinyl monomer units having a carboxyl group or salt thereof and vinyl monomer units having a sulfo group or salt thereof in amounts to make the mol ratio of the carboxyl group to the sulfo group in the range of 30:70 to 95:5 and having weight average molecular weight calibrated with polystyrene in the range of 1,000 to 100,000 to the cooling water system while operating the cooling water system and the cleaved or dissolved scale is discharged out of the cooling water system by blowing. The scale removing agent for a cooling water system has excellent ability to remove scale, does not require much man power nor causes loss of productivity because the scale can be cleaned and removed without stopping the circulation of the cooling water while the ordinary operation of the system is maintained and has no possibility of such danger to operator as found in conventional acid cleaning processes because the agent is used in less acidic condition. Furthermore, the polymer itself has the characteristic that is not easily formed. The finishing point of the scale removal can be found easily by measuring the pH value on the spot of the operation without stopping the operation of the cooling water system.

Method of removing scale

Disclosed are an aluminum alloy casting having a high strength and a high toughness, and a production process for the same. The aluminum alloy casting comprises silicon (Si) in an amount of 2.5 to 4.4% by weight, copper (Cu) in an amount of 1.5 to 2.5% by weight, magnesium (Mg) in an amount of 0.2 to 0.5% by weight and the balance of aluminum (Al), and a matrix thereof includes a dendrite which has a size of 30 micrometers or less. Since the Si addition amount is suppressed as less as possible and since the size of the dendrite is micro-fined in the aluminum alloy casting, the toughness is improved remarkably. Further, since the Cu and Mg are added in the predetermined addition amounts, the strength is enhanced in the aluminum alloy casting. In addition, a solution treatment which is employed in the production process can further enhance the strength of the aluminum alloy casting.

A method for producing aluminum alloy castings and the resulting product having improved toughness. An Al-Si or Al-Si-Cu alloy containing 4 to 24 wt % of silicon, iron and other incidental impurities, the balance being aluminum is melted, and the melt is heated to a temperature between 780.degree. C. and 950.degree. C. The melt is poured into a mold and there solidified. A solution heat treatment and aging are then conducted. The process is suitable for an alloy containing 0.25 to 1.4 wt % of iron. In a preferred embodiment, the alloy consists essentially of 6 to 12 wt % Si, 2 wt % Cu, 0.2 to 0.4 wt % Mg and other incidental impurities, the balance being aluminum. The solution heat treatment is preferably carried out by heating between 525.degree. 545.degree. C. for a period of 1 to 5 hours.
