37 A liquid crystal display device is provided which comprises a cell unit having a pair of optically transparent substrates each having an optically transparent electrode layer and an alignent layer for liquid crystal formed in this order on one side of the substrate. The paired substrates is in spaced relation with each other and is arranged such that the respective alignment layers are facing each other. A liquid crystal is contained in the space between the paired substrates. The alignment layers are made of a polymer material having both a ring structure and a substituted group at side chains thereof and are subjected to rubbing treatment. The use of the alignment layers ensures a great pretilt angle for liquid crystal molecules.

A projection type liquid crystal display device for transmitting three color light beams of RGB through three TN type liquid crystal panels and projecting the transmitted light beams optimizes the RGB transmission characteristics by changing the crossing angles of the polarization axes of a polarizer and an analyzer with respect to the orientation directions of the respective RGB TN cells in specified directions, and also a projection type liquid crystal display device for transmitting a light beam through a TN type liquid crystal panel and projecting the transmitted light beam effects temperature-compensation of the transmission characteristics of the liquid crystal panels by controlling the crossing angle of the polarization axes of a polarizer and an analyzer. Both projection type liquid crystal display devices are relatively simple in the construction, are able to optimize the transmission characteristics of the liquid crystal panels, and have excellent properties in the contrast and in the color reproducibility.

A thermal insulator comprises an expanded resin body having embedded therein an evacuated powder insulation portion which consists of fine powder and a container of film-like plastics or a film-like composite of plastics and metal for enclosing the powder. The resin body has been expanded by a Freon gas as a blowing agent. Since a Freon gas has a larger molecular diameter than the constituent gases of air, it is less likely to permeate through the container than air. Thus present invention provides a novel composite insulator which fully utilizes the benefits of vacuum insulation without necessitating a strong and costly material for a vacuum container.

This invention relates to a composite function element which includes a high resistance thin film layer containing the constitutional elements of a perovskite type oxide and specified impurity elements at the grain boundary of a sintered body, said sintered body comprises an agglomerate of n type semiconductor particles and to a process for producing said composite function element. The composite function element has a composite function such that it acts as a varistor passing high voltages at a high voltage and as a capacitor passing the currents of abnormal frequency zone at a low voltage, so that the functions of two elements, a varistor and a capacitor, can be fulfilled simultaneously with only one element. Therefore, its extensive application in uses such as, for example, prevention of erroneous operation of microcomputer-controlled instruments can be expected.

Grain boundary layer dielectric ceramic compositions comprising semiconductive ceramic grains having a composition of 50.23 to 49.47 mol % of SrO and CaO, 49.72 to 50.23 mol % of TiO.sub.2, 0.05 to 0.3 mol % of Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5, substantially each of said grains being surrounded by grain boundary layer dielectric materials which are formed by grain boundary diffusion of a mixture having a composition of 93.5 to 8.5 mol % of Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3, 4.5 to 45 mol % of Cu.sub.2 O, 0.5 to 4 mol % of MnO.sub.2, 1 to 8.5 mol % of B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0.5 to 17 mol % of La.sub.2 O.sub.3, and below 17 mol % of TiO.sub.2. These ceramic compositions provide capacitors having a temperature coefficient of capacitance less than .+-.15%, an apparent dielectric constant higher than 35,000, a dielectric loss less than 0.01 and a breakdown voltage higher than 500 V/mm; or capacitors having a temperature coefficient of capacitance less than .+-.10%, an apparent dielectric constant higher than 20,000, a dielectric loss less than 0.01 and a breakdown voltage higher than 700 V/mm; or capacitors having a temperature coefficient of capacitance less than .+-.5%, an apparent dielectric constant higher than 5,000, a dielectric loss less than 0.01 and a breakdown voltage higher than 700 V/mm.

Grain boundary layer dielectric ceramic compositions

A ceramic sensor device is disclosed which comprises a sensing element of a ceramic material and electric conductors for connection to external circuit which are tightly embedded within a ceramic insulating body. The solid state sensor device having an excellent capability to withstand detrimental conditions such as a high temperature, rapid temperature change and mechanical shocks is provided. The sensor is advantageously used as a temperature sensor, a moisture sensor and a gas sensor for detecting oxidizing and reducing gas. Above all, the sensor is suited as a temperature sensor device for detecting temperature of exhaust gas purifying catalyst used in motor vehicles.

Oxide thermistor compositions which comprise 100 atomic % of at least four kinds of cations which are (1) Mn ion, (2) Ni ion, (3) at least one kind of ion selected from the group consisting of Cu, Fe, and Cr, and (4) one kind of ion selected from the group consisting of Cr, Zr, and Li. A high temperature thermistor composition comprising a spinel-type Mg Al.sub.2 O.sub.4 and perovskite-type La CrO.sub.3 or (La, Sr) CrO.sub.3 is usable for the temperature range from 400.degree. to 600.degree. C, and a high temperature thermistor composition comprising spinel-type solid solution Mg(Al, Cr).sub.2 O.sub.4 and perovskite-type solid solution (La, Sr) CrO.sub.3 or LaCrO.sub.3 is usable for a higher temperature range up to 1000.degree. C.

A PTC thermistor composition comprising BaTiO.sub.3, TiO.sub.2, one oxide selected from the group consisting of Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 and Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, SiO.sub.2, Li.sub.2 CO.sub.3, MnO.sub.2 and one oxide selected from the group consisting of Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3, and process for the production thereof are provided. Said process is characterized by the addition of TiO.sub.2 and Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 to BaTiO.sub.3 before calcination and the addition of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, SiO.sub.2, Li.sub.2 CO.sub.3, MnO.sub.2 and Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3 after the calcination. This PTC thermistor composition has a high breakdown voltage, a large electric current at the initial moment of a voltage application which current decreases rapidly with continuing voltage application, low specific resistivity and, good stability of resistivity.
