In a hydraulic brake for a transmission, an assist piston, a reaction piston and a main piston are accommodated on a cylinder. The assist piston has a first acting portion in abutment against the main piston, and the main piston has a second acting portion facing one end of stacked frictional engaging elements. The assist piston and the main piston are moved rightwardly by a hydraulic pressure supplied to a first oil chamber and a second oil chamber to bring the frictional engaging elements into engagement with one another. The first and second acting portions are superposed as viewed axially, thereby preventing a jarring of the assist piston and the main piston. In one embodiment, each of the pistons is formed from a pressed article, whereby the machining cost can be reduced and, moreover, oil passages connecting the first and second oil chambers can be provided in a simple manner.

Hydraulic brake for transmission

Frictional engagement elements of a first hydraulic clutch and frictional engagement elements of a second hydraulic clutch are supported on a common clutch drum on opposite sides of a snap ring. Openings are defined respectively in the clutch drum and an urging member which is formed integrally with a clutch piston of the second hydraulic clutch for urging the frictional engagement elements toward the snap ring. An urging member for urging the frictional engage elements toward the snap ring is connected to a clutch piston of the first hydraulic clutch and extends through the openings to the outside of the clutch drum. Thus, the pair of hydraulic clutches disposed in a tandem fashion can be operated stably without interference from each other.

Tandem type hydraulic clutch system

A support shaft is fixed to a casing of a transmission. A main shaft is relatively rotatably fitted to an inner periphery of the support shaft with a needle bearing interposed therebetween, and a clutch hub is relatively rotatably fitted to an outer periphery of the support shaft. An annular groove is defined around the outer periphery of the support shaft and divided into an oil discharge groove and an oil supply groove by a pair of weirs. An oil supplied from an oil passage is supplied to a canceller oil chamber through the oil supply groove and oil holes in the clutch hub. The oil in the canceller oil chamber is discharged through the oil holes, the oil discharge groove, oil passages in the support shaft, the needle bearing and oil passages in the main shaft. Thus, it is possible to quickly supply and discharge the oil into and from the canceller oil chamber in the hydraulic clutch, thereby preventing a failure of engagement of the hydraulic clutch at the starting of an engine at a low temperature and a dragging of the hydraulic clutch after the starting of an engine.

A clutch drum made of a metallic plate having on its peripheral wall portion spline teeth for engaging with clutch plates is formed by pressing with a die which has formed tooth grooves on its periphery and tooth-shaped punches which are disposed around the die so as to move radially back and forth. The force of pressurizing the toothed punches against the tooth flank portions of the spline teeth is made smaller at an open end thereof than at an ordinary portion of the clutch drum such that the thickness of the flank portions of the spline teeth becomes thicker at the open end than at the ordinary portion.

Clutch drum made of metallic plate and method of manufacturing same

A clutch drum has a drum main body made of a metallic plate which is formed into a cup shape by drawing. Spline teeth for engaging with clutch plates are formed by pressing on a periphery of the drum main body. Pulsing teeth for detecting a rotational speed are formed by pressing on the periphery of the drum main body. An apparatus for manufacturing the clutch drum has a forming die onto which the drum main body is externally set in position. The forming die has formed thereon first tooth spaces corresponding to the spline teeth and second tooth spaces corresponding to the pulsing teeth. First tooth-shaped punches are provided so as to be movable radially back forth to form by pressing the spline teeth by urging the periphery of the drum main body into the first tooth spaces. Second tooth-shaped punches are provided so as to be movable also radially back and forth integrally with the first tooth-shaped punches to form by pressing the pulsing teeth by urging the periphery of the drum main body into the second tooth spaces.
