A method for optimizing orientations of an anisotropic material in a component. For example, the method overcomes the non-uniqueness and gimbal locking problems associated with using Euler angles to define the orientation by instead parameterizing the orientation using an orientation tensor that is a self-dyadic product of a direction vector. To avoid non-linear constraints in the mathematical design variables used in the optimization, isoparametric shape functions map the mathematical design variables to physical design variables, and the mapping ensures that various constraints associated with tensor invariants of the orientation tensor are satisfied even though these constraints are not directly imposed on the mathematical design variables. The physical design variables are used to model the component, whereas optimization is performed using the mathematical design variables. Thus, optimization is greatly simplified by removing the tensor-invariant constraints from the optimization step to the mapping step.

A vehicle power window control device includes an opening-closing section, a detection section, and a controller. The opening-closing section is disposed at a side door of a vehicle, and is configured to move window glass provided at the side door. The detection section is disposed at a location further toward a vehicle upper side than an armrest of the side door and further toward a vehicle front side than a door inner handle of the side door, and is configured to detect a hand movement by an occupant within a detection region set at a vehicle inner side of the location. The controller closes the window glass in a case in which an upward hand movement by the occupant has been detected by the detection section, and opens the window glass in a case in which a downward hand movement by the occupant has been detected by the detection section.

A polishing device for a welding tip includes a cylindrical holder; and a polishing unit. The polishing unit includes a blade configured to polish a welding tip. The blade polishes the welding tip due to rotation of the polishing unit. The holder includes a groove extending along an entire inner circumference of the holder. The groove includes axial groove portions each of which extends along an axis of the holder, and inclined groove portions each of which extends for a specified first distance and is inclined in one direction with respect to the axial groove portions. The axial groove portions and the inclined groove portions are alternately arranged. The polishing unit includes projected portions each of which extends to an inside of the groove, and the number of the projected portions is two or more and is equal to or less than the number of the axial groove portions.

A battery module disposed in a battery pack includes a plurality of flat plate batteries that are stacked; a connection member having a connection member main body that has a plate-shape and disposed in parallel with the flat plate batteries in a stacking direction of the flat plate batteries; and insulation members disposed on side surfaces of the connection member main body in the stacking direction of the flat plate batteries. The connection member has two terminals, a first terminal of the two terminals is connected to a terminal of the flat plate batteries, and a second terminal is connected to a terminal of an adjacent battery module.

A front pillar includes a front-side front pillar and a rear-side front pillar disposed apart from each other in a longitudinal direction of a vehicle. The front-side front pillar is formed in a pipe-like shape in which end faces of a plate member are joined to each other. The front-side front pillar includes a first pillar part having a first circumference, and a third pillar part having a second circumference different from the first circumference.

A joining method is a method of joining a plate set composed by a plurality of stacked plate members including a first plate member and a second plate member by using a tapping screw. When the tapping screw is advanced into the plate set while the tapping screw is rotated in a state of applying a pressure onto the plate set so as to form through-holes in the first plate member and the second plate member, a first pressure applied onto the tapping screw is reduced down to a second pressure at the time when the tapping screw penetrates the first plate member.

A protrusion on a first member made of synthetic resin wherein a laser beam is applied to a side surface of the protrusion in a state in which a top surface of the protrusion of the first member is abutted against a second member made of synthetic resin, so as to melt at least the entire top surface of the protrusion and melt a portion of the second member in contact with the protrusion by heat of the melted top surface of the protrusion, followed by solidification of the melted portions, whereby the first member and the second member are welded together.

A pillar structure of a vehicle including a glass attachment surface configured to have a windshield of the vehicle or a rear window of the vehicle attached thereto, a side part outer surface configured to have an upper edge of the fender panel extending in a front-rear direction of the vehicle connected thereto downwardly, a protruding corner portion configured to be provided to protrude to the fender panel along a pillar extending direction at a corner of a lower end on the side part outer surface on the glass attachment surface side such that an angle formed by a protruding direction and the upper edge of the fender panel is in a predetermined acute angle range in a side view, and a recess bead configured to be formed on the glass attachment surface along the protruding corner portion.
