A mutated alkaline cellulase derived from a cellulase having the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO: 1 or one having a homology of at least 90% therewith by deleting one or more amino acid residues from the 343- to 377-positions in SEQ ID NO: 1 or a region corresponding thereto and then inserting a peptide having from 2 to 15 amino acid residues into the deletion site; and a gene encoding the same. The above alkaline cellulase has an optimum pH value close to the pH value of laundry water and, therefore, is useful as an enzyme for detergents.

Mutated alkaline cellulase

The present invention relates to alkaline cellulase variants having an amino acid sequence which exhibits at least 95% homology with the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2, wherein said alkaline cellulase variant is mutated to include at least one substitution at (a) position 10, (b) position 16, (c) position 22, (d) position 33, (e) position 39, (f) position 76, (g) position 109, (h) position 242, (i) position 263, (j) position 308, (k) position 462, (l) position 466, (m) position 468, (n) position 552, (o) position 564, or (p) position 608 in SEQ ID NO: 2, or at a position corresponding thereto, wherein said alkaline cellulase variant has alkaline cellulase activity. The present invention also relates to a gene encoding the variant; a vector containing the gene; a transformant containing the vector; and a detergent composition containing the alkaline cellulase variant.

The present invention relates to a novel enzyme called alkaline proteinase K-16 that is characterized as having an optimum pH in an alkaline range, and stability in the presence of various surface active agents, such as sodium linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, sodium polyoxyethylene alkyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium .alpha.-olefin sulfonate, sodium alkyl sulfonate, and .alpha.-sulfo-fatty acid ester. The present invention further provides for the microorganism Bacillus sp. Ferm BP-3376, which is capable of producing the novel alkaline proteinase, and a process for producing the novel alkaline proteinase. Alkaline-proteinase K-16 of the present invention exhibits an excellent action against insoluble proteins and maintains sufficient activity over a wide temperature range and in the presence of surface active agents thus providing a use as an enzyme for detergents.
