The present invention provides a chemiluminescence enhancer treated to retain favorable dispersibility of fine solid carriers and stably exert a chemiluminescence enhancing action. The invention provides a chemiluminescence enhancer used for signal detection in a solid phase immunoassay using antigen or/and antibody immobilized onto fine solid carriers dispersible in a liquid medium, consisting of a water soluble macromolecular quaternary ammonium salt, a quaternary sulfonium salt or a quaternary phosphonium salt in order to enhance emission of light caused by an enzymatic reaction of a chemiluminescent substrate having dioxetane, wherein the chemiluminescence enhancer is given an aggregation inhibition treatment of the fine solid carriers by the treatment with an oxidizing agent or a reducing agent, and a chemiluminescence method and a kit using the chemiluminescence enhancer.

A device for performing this enzyme-labeled immunoassay includes an absorbent material capable of transporting a developing solution by capillary action, the absorbent material including (a) a developing liquid application zone, (b) an enzyme-labeled reagent zone containing an enzyme-labeled reagent, (c) a sample receiving zone, and (d) an indicator reagent zone capable of immobilising the enzyme-labeled reagent after the reaction of the test sample with the enzyme-labeled reagent in an amount dependent on the assay result, with an enzyme inhibitor being applied to a portion in the absorbent material upstream of the enzyme-labeled reagent zone, which enzyme inhibitor prevents the formation of a signal from a predetermined time on after the enzyme-labeled reagent is immobilised at the indicator reagent zone.

An automatic immunoassay apparatus utilizes cartridges each having at least two wells, a first well of said wells containing solid phase material carrying antigen or antibody, a second well of said wells containing antibody or antigen labelled with labelling compound. The wells may be sealed with a suitable sealing film before use and the sealing film is broken when the cartridge is to be used. The cartridges are transported to a predetermined position on a steppingly movable reaction line and conveyed thereby at a predetermined interval.
