A warning device for a vehicle to start a warning at an optimum timing depending on a position at which an object passes near the vehicle. When a warning is generated for a driver of a host vehicle based on approach information about a moving object, a selection between a first warning method and a second warning method is determined in accordance with the moving direction of the moving object with respect to the host vehicle. By detecting a reflected light of a laser light emitted to an entire emission region, objects, other than a road surface, existing within the emission region are identified. When the objects other than the road surface are identified, a spread angle of the laser light, which is required for measuring the identified objects with a necessary accuracy, is determined. When the spread angle is determined, the laser light is emitted, at the determined spread angle, to the objects other than the road surface, and thereby the respective objects are measured.
