According to one embodiment, a display device includes a display unit configured to display an image for right eye and an image for left eye. Resolution of the display unit is P pixels or more per inch. Pixel shift of the image for right eye and the image for left eye displayed on the display unit is 0.021&#xd7;P pixels or less and one pixel or more.

Methods and apparatus for splitting light received from at least one subject into at least first and second components of light, converting the first component of light into a first electrical signal representing a base image of the at least one subject, dispersing the second component of light into at least a right component of light and a left component of light; converting the right component of light into a second electrical signal representing a right detection image at a first angle; and converting the left component of light into a third electrical signal representing a left detection image at a second angle different from the first angle. The present invention relates to an imaging apparatus and an imaging method so as to be able to obtain disparity information, without deteriorating the image quality of the image. Incident light from a subject is made to be parallel light by a relay lens unit, part thereof is reflected by a transmissive mirror, and the remaining incident light transmits the transmissive mirror. An imaging deviceperforms photoelectric conversion on the incident light which has transmitted the transmissive mirrorand images a basic image, and an imaging deviceperforms photoelectric conversion on the incident light which has reflected off of the transmissive mirrorand images disparity detection images. A disparity image generating unitreplaces pixel values of each pixel on the disparity detection images into the pixel values on the pixels on the basic image corresponding to these pixels and generates right and left disparity images. In this way, if used high-quality basic image and disparity detection image having disparity information, high-quality disparity image pair with appropriate disparity can be obtained. The present invention can be applied to a camera.

A light ray output from a subject is separated into left and right light rays by mirrors in an area in which a diverging light ray output from a point of the subject is converted into a parallel light ray. When a subject is looked at from the right side or the left side, the light rays are reflected by various mirrors. The light rays reflected by the mirrors are made incident on image forming lenses. These light rays form an image on a light receiving surface of an imaging device. In this way, a high-quality 3D image having an appropriate parallax level and a small chromatic aberration is captured.

A three-dimensional image pickup apparatus, a three-dimensional display apparatus and a three-dimensional image pickup and display apparatus are disclosed by which high-definition three-dimensional display from a plurality of eye points of different directions can be achieved by a simple apparatus configuration. The incoming directions and the intensities of a plurality of lights incoming from different directions to a light reception section are coordinated with each other for individual pixels to form video signals. A light emission section emits lights based on a coordinated relationship between the outgoing directions and the intensities of lights to be emitted therefrom for the individual pixels. The light incoming directions and the light outgoing directions are time-divisionally selected by means of light path selection elements, and a plurality of pixels are formed to pick up and display images having a parallax.

LED backlights-to-N illuminate the pixels of the LCD, respectively, so as to illuminate part of all the columns or rows on the screen. A display control sectioncontrols the light emission of the LED backlights-to-N in a manner such that the LED backlights-to-N illuminate the pixels updated in sequence in each period of the frame. The invention can be applied to display devices.
