A liquid crystal display device includes a surface light-emitting device. The surface light-emitting device includes a light source and a light guide panel having a light incident surface provided on an end surface thereof for introducing light from the light source and an exit surface from which the light is radiated. The light guide panel includes a reflecting surface which faces the exit surface and which is provided with a plurality of grooves formed sequentially in a stripe pattern, each of the grooves having a gentle slope and a steep slope whose slope angle is steeper than that of the gentle slope. The direction in which the amount of light radiated from the exit surface of the light guide panel is maximized defines an angle of 1&deg; to 10&deg; with respect to the normal line of the exit surface.

A highly reliable reflection type liquid crystal display device having an organic film is disclosed in which generation of cracks in an electrode layer caused by the sinking in of the terminals of a driving element are prevented. A reliable electrical connection is thereby established between the driving element and the first electrode layer and the organic film is prevented from being separated from the substrate. The reflection type liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates, a seal material held between the pair of substrates, and a liquid crystal layer sealed in the space surrounded by the pair of substrates and the seal material. The organic film, which has a plurality of protrusions and recesses, a metal reflection film, an overcoat film, and first electrode layers sequentially formed on the surface of one of the pair of substrates. The organic film and the metal reflection film are formed in a display region but are not formed in a driving element mounting region.

A method for producing a reflector has: a step for applying a photosensitive resin onto a base member to form a photosensitive-resin layer; a step for pressing a mold, having a fine uneven pattern on the surface thereof, to the photosensitive-resin layer so as to transfer the shape of the fine uneven pattern to the photosensitive-resin layer; a step for curing the photosensitive-resin layer by radiating a light beam to the photosensitive-resin layer while pressing the mold to the photosensitive-resin layer; a step for removing the mold from the cured photosensitive-resin layer; and a step for forming a metallic reflective film on the fine uneven pattern transferred to the surface of the cured photosensitive-resin layer. Since the fine uneven pattern is formed on the photosensitive-resin layer by pressing the mold thereto and is covered with the metallic reflective film, a reflection face of the resulting reflector can obtain the shape of the fine uneven pattern transferred from the mold.

A reflective type liquid crystal display of this invention comprises a reflector member having corrugated surface stored therein; an overcoat layer formed on the corrugated surface of the reflector member for making the corrugated surface flat; and a color filter layer formed on the overcoat layer, and wherein a thickness of the overcoat layer is more than twice of a depth of the concave part in the corrugated surface of the reflector member.

A liquid crystal display having heat resistance, a sufficiently large pretilt angle, and capable of preventing generation of domains and improving the reliability thereof is disclosed. Each alignment layer has, on the surfaces thereof, roof-like concave and convex rows, formed by repeatedly, in a first direction, forming convex portions each consisting of a longer side portion and a shorter side portion, and valley-like concave and convex rows having the height that is lower than that of the roof-like concave and convex rows and formed in the same direction as that of the roof-like concave and convex rows in such a manner that the roof-like concave and convex rows and the valley-like concave and convex rows are adjacently and alternately formed. Thus, concaves and convexes having a unit length of repetition, that is shorter than a unit length of repetition of the concaves and convexes formed in the first direction, are formed in a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction. Furthermore, the alignment layer is made of a compound having main chains, that are stable with respect to UV light, and side chains, each of which has an aliphatic ringing group to which aromatic groups are bonded, and which cross-link between the main chains, wherein the aromatic groups are aligned substantially in the first direction.

The UV crosslinking compound of the present invention is characterized in having the following chemical formula, and has high photosensitivity. Accordingly, the crosslinking reaction can be accomplished within a short period of time. Thus, if this compound is employed in the alignment film for a LCD component, it becomes possible to carry out a sufficient alignment treatment with UV irradiation over a short period of time. Accordingly, production time can be shortened and production costs reduced. ##STR1## wherein, n is an integer, and X is an atom selected from among F, Cl, Br, I and CN.

An alignment layer for use in liquid crystals including a macromolecular material deposited on a glass substrate, the macromolecular material composed of main molecular chains which are, on the average, aligned in a first direction. A series of parallel microgrooves are formed in the macromolecular material and aligned perpendicular to the first direction, each microgroove being separated by a ridge having a triangular cross-section, and each ridge having first and second sides meeting at an apex, wherein the first side has a shorter length than the second side. As a result, disclination does not occur and sufficient reliability against external forces and heat may be obtained. In addition, numerous methods are disclosed for forming the alignment layer.

Alignment layer for liquid crystal element and method of producing same

An orientation film for a liquid crystal display. The film is formed on a substrate and has a first irregular form repeated in a first direction and a second irregular form repeated in a second direction, which is perpendicular to the first direction. The second irregular form has a longer pitch than the pitch of the first irregular form. The profile of the second irregular form in any plane perpendicular to the first direction has a portion inclined with respect to the substrate. The pretilt angle of the orientation film is high. The patterns may be irregular and asymmetric, which may be ridges separated by a continuous groove. The orientation may be formed by using a first mold having one of the patterns, and a second mold with a second pattern, or first and second holographic exposed layers. The orientation layer may be a liquid crystal polymer which is formed by using a heated stamper to form a pattern in a high polymer liquid crystal while applying a voltage.
