A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus is disclosed wherein reproduced signals read out from a plurality of recording tracks using a reproducing head can be separated into original recording signals of the recording tracks. Upon recording, an identification signal which has a recording wavelength equal to or greater than a minimum recording wavelength and causes no interference of any of the recording tracks with any adjacent one of the recording tracks is appended to and recorded together with a recording signal in order to allow, upon reproduction, acquisition of the position information of the reproducing head with respect to the plural recording tracks of the magnetic recording medium. Upon reproduction, a reproduced signal for each of the recording tracks of the magnetic recording medium is generated on the basis of the positional information read from the recording tracks.

In order to decrease a required memory capacity of a line memory and to efficiently compress an image by coding, even when character information is contained in a high-resolution image, each time the block of an image that is equally divided into M (M: an arbitrary integer greater than 1) blocks in the horizontal direction is updated, difference data between color code data at corresponding pixel positions in the horizontal line and the adjacent immediately-preceding horizontal line with respect to each horizontal line within the block is detected by a line memory and an exclusive-OR circuit. A method and apparatus for tracking control of a magnetic head having information signals and tracking signals recorded on a plurality of slanted tracks measures a time duration from a time when a rotary head drum passes a reference position to a time when the head starts to reproduce the tracking signal. The measured time duration and a reference value are compared to determine whether the difference falls within a predescribed range and the relative speed between the transporting speed of the tape and the peripheral speed of the rotary head drum is controlled based on the comparison results when the determination results falls within the prescribed ranged. The reference value is continuously monitored and updated from a memory when the measured difference exceeds a predetermined value.
