A multiplex image display device prevents onscreen input buttons from appearing at the same positions. A 'command area' refers to an area of the display screen where the user can enter a command for manipulating one of images being simultaneously displayed on the single display section for individual viewing from different directions. In the multiplex image display device, the positioning control section controls the positioning of the command areas so that a command area for one of the images being simultaneously displayed on the display section is displayed at a different (i.e., non-overlapping) position on the display section from a command area for another one of such images.

In a display device, when a first image is an absolute white image, a direction in which a luminance is maximum is regarded as a main viewing direction for the first image. A luminance Ld in the main viewing direction for the first image in cases where the first image is an absolute black image and other image is an absolute white image, and a luminance Lb in the main viewing direction for the first image in cases where the first image and the other image are absolute black images satisfy a relationship represented by Formula (1):()/&#x2266;2.5&#x2003;&#x2003;(1).This makes it possible to realize a display device, which is capable of displaying different images to a plurality of different viewpoints and has an improved function of separating the images in the different display directions.

A display device includes a display panel and a parallax barrier bonded together with an adhesive layer made of a light-curing resin (for example, ultraviolet curing resin). The display device allows 3D display or multiple-image display. The parallax barrier includes a pattern-formed light-shielding layer on barrier glass. The parallax barrier has an area that does not include the light-shielding layer on the periphery portions thereof. Thus, with the display device including the parallax barrier and the display panel bonded together, peeling on adhesive planes of the parallax barrier and display panel is less likely to occur.

A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel and a parallax barrier with a barrier light-shielding layer patterned on a barrier glass, bonded with an adhesive layer composed of an ultraviolet curing resin, provided with an area without a light-shielding layer on the peripheral portion of the parallax barrier, and a sealing material is arranged between a TFT substrate and a CF substrate with at least a portion thereof overlapping with the area without the light-shielding layer. Thus, peeling on the bonding surfaces between the parallax barrier and the liquid crystal display panel does not easily occur, and the occurrence of display non-uniformity due to strain of the CF substrate is prevented.

A 2D/3D switching type liquid crystal display device includes: (i) display liquid crystal panel () for generating an image in accordance with input image data; (ii) patterned retardation plate () for rendering a certain viewing angle to a display image during 3D display, so as to provide a 3D effect; and (iii) a switching liquid crystal panel () for switching 2D display and 3D display by activating and deactivating the effect of the parallax barrier means. The patterned retardation plate () and the switching liquid crystal panel () respectively have wider active areas than an active area of the display image generating means. With this, the 2D/3D switching liquid crystal display device allows for a viewing angle in 2D as wide as a viewing angle of 2D-only display.

A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate; a second substrate opposing the first substrate via a large number of columnar spacers therebetween, the columnar spacers being fixed on the first substrate; and a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. The liquid crystal display device has a display area for displaying an image, and a non-display area adjacent to the display area. In the display area of the liquid crystal display device, a plurality of display electrodes that are used when applying a voltage across the liquid crystal layer are provided at an interval on one side of the first substrate that is closer to the liquid crystal layer, whereas in the non-display area, a plurality of peripheral electrodes are provided with substantially no interval therebetween on the side of the first substrate that is closer to the liquid crystal layer. Among the large number of columnar spacers in the liquid crystal display device, the columnar spacers in the display area are provided on the display electrodes while the columnar spacers that define a thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the non-display area are provided on the peripheral electrodes.
