Provided is a cutting tool comprising a base body and a hard carbon film arranged on the base body, in which the hard carbon film includes an amorphous phase and a graphite phase, the degree of crystallinity of the hard carbon film is no more than 6.5%, and the degree of orientation of the graphite phase is no more than 6.

Cutting tool

Provided is a cutting tool that can have a long tool life even when used to cut soft metals in particular. The cutting tool comprises a base body and a hard carbon film arranged on the base body, the hard carbon film includes an amorphous phase and a graphite phase, the density of the hard carbon film is no less than 2.5 g/cmand no more than 3.5 g/cm, the degree of crystallinity of the hard carbon film is no more than 6.5%, and the average coordination number of the amorphous phase is no less than 2.5 and no more than 4.

At least one layer in a coating located on a surface of a substrate is a domain structure layer constituted of two or more domains different in composition and a thin layer located between the domains and being different in composition from each of the domains. The thin layer is located between any one domain and any another domain and in contact therewith. When the size of each of a plurality of first domains present in the domain structure layer is defined as a diameter of a virtual circumcircle in contact with each first domain, the average value of the size of each first domain is not smaller than 1 nm and not greater than 10 nm and a thickness of the thin layer in a direction of thickness of the domain structure layer is not less than 1 atomic layer and not more than 10 atomic layers.

Coating

At least one layer in a coating located on a surface of a substrate is a domain structure layer constituted of two or more domains different in composition. The average value of the size of each of first domains, defined as the diameter of a virtual circumcircle in contact with each first domain, is 1 nm to 10 nm. The average value of the nearest neighbor distance of each first domain, defined as the length of the shortest straight line connecting the center of the circumcircle with the center of another circumcircle adjacent to the circumcircle, is 1 nm to 12 nm. 95% or more of the first domains has a size within &#xb1;25% of the average value of the size, and 95% or more of the first domains has a nearest neighbor distance within &#xb1;25% of the average value of the nearest neighbor distance.

It is an object to provide a rotating tool having an excellent wear resistance. The rotating tool includes: a base member including a cutting edge portion and a flute portion; and a coating film that coats a surface of the base member, a ratio B/A of a film thickness B of the coating film coating a surface of the flute portion to a film thickness A of the coating film coating a surface of the cutting edge portion being not less than 0.8.

A friction stir welding tool () of the present invention is used for friction stir welding, and includes: a base material (); and a coating layer () formed on a surface of at least a portion of the base material () that is to be caused to contact workpieces during friction stir welding, the coating layer () containing cubic WC.

Coated rotary tool and method for manufacturing the same

There is provided a tool for friction stir welding, in which a coating layer is less likely to peel off from a base material and excellent wear resistance is achieved. The tool for friction stir welding according to the present invention includes a base material (BM) and a coating layer. The BM includes a first hard phase (FP) formed by WC particles, a second hard phase (SP) and a binder phase (BP). The SP is formed by a compound of one or more metals selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W and one or more elements selected from nitrogen, carbon, boron, and oxygen, and is included in the BM at a volume ratio of 3% to 30%. The BP is included in the BM at a volume ratio of 8% to 28%. The FP is higher than the SP in terms of volume ratio.

Rotary tool

There is provided a tool for friction stir welding, which is capable of promoting temperature rise of materials to be joined during joining to achieve friction stir welding in a short time, is excellent in heat insulating property of a coating layer, and is excellent in oxidation resistance and wear resistance. A tool for friction stir welding according to the present invention is a tool for friction stir welding including a base material and a coating layer formed on the base material, wherein the coating layer is formed of one or more layers, and at least one layer of the coating layer has a thermal permeability of 5000 J/s&#xb7;m&#xb7;K or less.

Coated rotary tool

There is provided a tool for friction stir welding having excellent wear resistance and chipping resistance. The tool for friction stir welding according to the present invention includes a base material, the base material includes a first hard phase, a second hard phase and a binder phase, the first hard phase is formed by WC particles, the second hard phase is formed by a compound of one or more metals selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W and one or more elements selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron, and oxygen, or a solid solution of the compound (except for WC), the binder phase is formed by an iron group metal, and the second hard phase is higher than or identical to the first hard phase in terms of volume ratio.

There is provided a tool for friction stir welding having excellent wear resistance and chipping resistance. The tool for friction stir welding according to the present invention is a tool for friction stir welding used in friction stir welding processing, wherein the tool for friction stir welding includes a base material, the base material includes a first hard phase and a binder phase, and has a thermal conductivity of 45 W/m&#xb7;K or less, the first hard phase is formed by WC particles, and the binder phase is formed by an iron group metal and is included in the base material at a volume ratio of 8% by volume or more and 28% by volume or less.

An amorphous hard carbon film comprising a first amorphous carbon layer substantially consists only of carbon formed on a substrate surface and a second amorphous carbon layer substantially consists only of carbon formed on the surface of the first amorphous carbon layer, wherein the transmission electron microscope image of the first amorphous carbon layer is brighter than that of the second amorphous carbon layer when the cross section is observed.

Hard amorphous carbon film

An amorphous carbon film is provided with a density of 2.8-3.3 g/cm. It would be preferable for the film to have: a spin density of 1&#xd7;10-1&#xd7;10spins/cm; a carbon concentration of at least 99.5 atomic percentage; a hydrogen concentration of no more than 0.5 atomic percentage; an inert gas element concentration of no more than 0.5 atomic percentage; and a Knoop hardness of 3000-7000. A mixed layer with a thickness of at least 0.5 nm and no more than 10 nm is formed from a parent material and at least material selected from: B, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W. An amorphous carbon film is disposed on the mixed layer or a metallic intermediate layer formed on the mixed layer, thereby increasing adhesion. This amorphous carbon film is formed with solid carbon using sputtering, cathode-arc ion plating, or laser abrasion.

Amorphous carbon film, process for producing the same and amorphous carbon film-coated material

Disclosed is a shim or a valve lifter for an automotive engine valve driving system that slides against a cam lobe of a camshaft to drive an intake/exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine. The shim or lifter has the top of a sliding surface thereof opposing the cam lobe and being coated with a hard carbon film. The hard carbon film has a surface hardness of 1500 to 4500 kg/mmin terms of Knoop hardness, a thickness of 0.3 to 2.0 &#x3bc;m and a surface roughness Ry (&#x3bc;m) satisfying the following equation (A):&#x3c;{(0.75&#x2212;/8000)&#xd7;&#x2003;&#x2003;(A)where h is the thickness (&#x3bc;m) of the hard carbon film; and Hk is the knoop hardness (kg/mm) of the hard carbon film. By imparting durability, reliability and a low friction coefficient to the hard carbon film that is said to be low in ductility to prevent the hard carbon film from becoming cracked and separated when applied to the sliding portion.

Amorphous carbon coated tools include substrates formed from a cubic boron nitride sintered body, a diamond sintered body, a silicon nitride sintered body, or an aluminum oxide-titanium carbide sintered body, and amorphous carbon films thereon to make the cutting edges of the tools. The amorphous carbon films contain hydrogen at 5 atomic percent or below and have a maximum thickness of 0.05 &#x3bc;m to 0.5 &#x3bc;m on the cutting edges. The amorphous carbon films are most suitable for applications to cutting tools exemplified by cutters, knives, and slitters, and to indexable inserts used for example in turning tools including drills, endmills, and reamers, and milling cutters.
