A flame retardant that is arranged to improve the cold resistance and the productivity of a composition, a flame-retardant composition, an insulated wire, a wiring harness, and a method for manufacturing the flame-retardant composition. The flame retardant includes a pulverized natural mineral which is mainly composed of magnesium hydroxide, wherein the pulverized natural mineral is surface-treated with an organic high polymer such as polyolefin. The amount of surface treatment is within a range of 0.1 to 10 mass %. The flame-retardant composition includes 30 to 250 parts by mass of the flame retardant with respect to 100 parts by mass of an organic high polymer such as polyolefin. The insulated wire includes a conductor and the flame-retardant composition which covers the conductor, and the wiring harness includes the insulated wire.

A wire covering material composition which is systematically different from a polyolefin resin composition and which possesses favorable flame retardancy, tensile elongation and wear resistance, having 100 parts by weight of a polymer blend containing 40-95 wt % of polybutylene terephthalate, and 1 to 30 parts by weight of a phosphoric ester compound with respect to 100 parts by weight of the polymer blend, wherein 5 to 100 wt % of the total content of the polybutylene terephthalate in the polymer blend is made up of polybutylene terephthalate, whose molecular weight distribution Mw/Mn (where Mw: weight-average molecular weight; Mn: number-average molecular weight) is greater than or equal to 2.5.

The insulated wire including an insulator layer made from a composition including 96 to 44 parts by weight of (A) a polyester type resin, 4 to 56 parts by weight of (B) a polyphenylene ether type resin, 1 to 70 parts by weight of (C) one or more than one sort of polymer selected from the group consisting of a styrene type polymer, an olefin type polymer including a functional group, and a polymer including an ester group with respect to 100 parts by weight of (A) the polyester type resin and (B) the polyphenylene ether type resin, and 1 to 50 parts by weight of (D) a phosphoester compound with respect to 100 parts by weight of (A) the polyester type resin and (B) the polyphenylene ether type resin.
