A combustion system for reducing an amount of air polluting substances in a combustion exhaust gas produced in a combustion furnace comprises a combustion furnace configured to produce a combustion exhaust gas upon combustion of a combustible material, wherein the combustion exhaust gas contains an amount of air polluting substances; an analyzer suitable for analyzing the combustion exhaust gas and producing an analytical signal; a conduit suitable for conducting the combustion exhaust gas from the outlet opening to the analyzer, wherein the conduit is located adjacent the outlet opening of the combustion furnace; a controller suitable for processing the analytical signal produced by the analyzer and outputting a first control signal and a second control signal, based on the analytical signal; a neutralizer supplier suitable for supplying the combustion furnace with an amount of neutralizers to reduce the amount of air polluting substances in the combustion exhaust gas, wherein the amount of neutralizers supplied to the combustion furnace is based on the first control signal outputted by the controller; and an operating condition readjuster suitable for readjusting at least one operating condition of the combustion furnace selected from the group consisting of (1) a temperature of the combustion furnace, (2) a time for combusting the combustible material, and (3) an air flow in the combustible furnace, to reduce the amount of air polluting substances in the combustion exhaust gas, wherein the at least one operating condition is readjusted based on the second control signal outputted by the controller.

In an air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine, an output from a first air-fuel ratio sensor arranged upstream of a three-way catalyst mounted across an exhaust passage of the engine is compared with a reference value during feedback control of the air-fuel ratio. A mass flowmeter outputs an output value indicative of the flow rate of a gaseous mixture containing evaporative fuel and being purged into the intake system of an internal combustion engine. A calculated value of the flow rate of the mixture is obtained based on a plurality of operating parameters of the engine. The actual flow rate of the mixture and/or the actual flow rate of the evaporative fuel are/is calculated based on the output value from the mass flowmeter and the calculated value based on the engine operating parameters. The concentration of the evaporative fuel is calculated from the calculated actual flow rates of the evaporative fuel and the mixture. The calculated actual flow rate is compared with a desired flow rate value, and a purge control valve is controlled based on results of the comparison. A basic amount of fuel supplied to the engine is corrected based on the calculated actual flow rate of the evaporative fuel.

A fuel injection control system for an internal combustion engine equipped with a heater for heating an air-fuel mixture in cold engine start. In the system, the timing to cease injection is first obtained by the coolant temperature and the engine load. The value is then deferred by an amount if the heater is turned on. The amount increases as the heater on-time increases. Then an injection period is added to the timing to cease injection and another timing to commence injection is determined. Thus, the injection timing is deferred if an air-fuel mixture is heated so as to minimize the residence time of the heated fuel. This ensures that the fuel will be quickly drawn to the cylinder to be burnt completely and the composition of the gas is thus improved.

An exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine employs a first control valve in an exhaust gas introduction passageway, a second control valve in an air conduit connecting the engine intake passage to atmosphere, and a regulating valve responsive to differential vacuum intensities for operating vacuum-responsive actuators for the control valves. A recirculation stop valve vents to atmosphere the actuator for the second control valve in response to an engine operating condition, to stop recirculation of exhaust gas.
