According to one embodiment, the liquid crystal material processing device includes a syringe containing contents composed of a liquid crystal material and the like, having a distal end portion constituting a first discharge pipe, an agitation mechanism agitating the contents of the syringe, a vacuum chamber having a second discharge pipe penetrating the bottom to connect to the first discharge pipe of the syringe. The agitation mechanism agitates the liquid crystal material and the pure water in the syringe, and purifies the liquid crystal material by causing water-soluble impurities to transfer to the pure water. The agitation mechanism agitates the liquid crystal material remaining in the syringe after the water layer has been discharged. The evacuation mechanism evacuates the vacuum chamber and causes the liquid crystal material to be degassed while the remaining liquid crystal material is agitated.

Liquid crystal material processing device, method of processing liquid crystal material, method of manufacturing liquid crystal display panel, and liquid crystal display device

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel which includes a pixel electrode, a liquid crystal layer and an alignment film, and a driver. The driver drives the pixel electrode at a drive frequency of 1 to 20 Hz. The alignment film has a resistivity of 5&#xd7;10&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm or more.

When an alignment film is applied to the whole surface of a substrate, adhesion intensity between a sealing material and the alignment film is further deteriorated. A display device includes an array substrate having a first alignment film, a counter substrate having a second alignment film, a liquid crystal layer in contact with the first alignment film and the second alignment film, and a sealing material for bonding the first alignment film and the second alignment film together, wherein the sealing material is provided with a portion adapted to increase the area of the adhered portion.

A scrambling method for TV pictures avoids picture deterioration by level compressing only selected horizontal flyback portions of the video signal to effect scrambling. A key signal is superposed on selected horizontal synch signals and, when removed at the decoder, enables level expansion of those horizontal flyback portions compressed in order to allow the TV receiver to effect synchronization. Data signals for enabling or disabling reception of particular programming such as paid programs may be superimposed on other selected horizontal synch signals.

Scrambling method for TV picture

A scrambling method for TV pictures avoids deterioration of the reproduced picture by level compressing only selected horizontal flyback portions according to a randomly selected pattern to prevent synchronization at the receiver. Key signals are added repetitively to a plurality of horizontal synch signals in one frame so as to enable descrambling of the picture at the decoder, even if noise or data error interferes with one or more of the signals.

Method for developing a key signal for descrambling in television

In a cable television system wherein a polling channel is provided for two-way communications between the center and the terminal units, video data signals are transmitted on request from the center to the terminal units during an otherwise idle period in said polling channel.

CATV System

A television signal scrambling and descrambling method and apparatus for use with a community antenna television system in which the scrambling mode employed is changed from time to time so that one cannot illegally receive the transmitted signals over a long period of time if only one of the scrambling techniques employed is decoded. In the central facility, a plurality of scrambling circuits are provided, one for each scrambling mode desired. A selected one of the scrambling circuits is selected by a switch device which is controlled so as to switch among the scrambling circuits as desired. An identifying signal is transmitted which indicates which of the scrambling circuits is active. In the terminal units at each subscriber's home there is provided a corresponding set of descrambling circuits. The received signal is coupled to the inputs of the descrambling circuits and the appropriate one of the descrambling circuits selected in accordance with the demodulated identifying signal.

Television signal scrambling method for CATV system

A two-way CATV system having a substantial number of terminals incorporates a central processor and transmitter system which continually interrogates the terminals at high speed, monitoring changes of usage of premium programs and other data while also permitting central control of access to restricted premium programs. For inexpensive but reliable intercommunication, short, fixed word length digital messages are frequency multiplexed onto the cable in both upstream and downstream directions, and subscriber groups are controllably selected in turn, with each subscriber being scanned in what may be an arbitrary order by transmission of unique private messages which are recognized at the terminal and in response to which previously prepared fixed length messages are immediately transmitted in return. By employing both upstream and downstream messages which are initiated by a series of synchronizing bits and non-ambiguously related subsequent data sequences, and by the provision of means to initiate both downstream and upstream messages of short length without delay, rapid but reliable data interchange is effected despite differences in transmission and response times with different subscribers. Concurrently, terminal status and various special conditions including security alarms are remotely processed at each terminal, and short upstream messages are assembled containing priority selected data to be transmitted in response to an interrogation. The system incorporates additional means for monitoring power status, program selection and authorization and other operating conditions at each terminal effectively to provide accurate and reliable accounting information while preventing unauthorized or improper usage of restricted premium programs.

Interactive CATV system

A descrambler system for a CATV television signal having IF audio, video and synchronizing components that is scrambled by a first amplitude modulation of the IF audio component and a second amplitude modulation of the combined audio, visual and synchronizing components by a key signal having a frequency that is an integral multiple of a 15.75 KHz horizontal synchronizing frequency includes a demodulator responsive to the scrambled signal, a key signal detecting circuit coupled to derive the key signal from the audio portion of the demodulator output and a dynamic limiter circuit coupled to remove noise from the key signal and provide a noise free sine wave key signal to the demodulator. The dynamic limiter circuit is an inexpensive circuit providing the signal processing characteristics of a much more expensive narrow band filter. It includes a current limiter circuit driven by a current source in proportion to the magnitude of the scrambled signal to provide a square wave signal at the key signal frequency that is proportional in magnitude to the scrambled signal and a simple filter that converts the square wave signal to a sine wave key signal that is used by the demodulator circuit with the exact shape, frequency and amplitude characteristics for noise free unscrambling of the scrambled CATV signal.

Descrambling device in CATV system

Video signals for television are effectively scrambled and may later be descrambled without the presence of annoying visual disturbances by the introduction of a superposed distorted sine wave in synchronism with the horizontal synchronizing signal, in a 'gray sync' mode of operation. Thereafter, the received signal may be normalized and descrambled by compensatory and synchronous modulation. Advantageously, the sinusoidal variation may be imposed both upon aural and visual components of the signal, and the aural AM signal may be utilized as a reference in descrambling the visual component.

Video scrambler and descrambler apparatus

The operative status of an electrical apparatus unit such as a television receiver, incorporating an AC-DC converter, and drawing a substantial amount of current is sensed while differentiating from the usage of a lower amount of current, as when operating in a standby mode. The sensor distinguishes between the standby current waveform and a distinctly different current waveform generated when the AC-DC converter draws current in the mode in which full power is on. The sensor incorporates a reference current detector responsive to the mean of the absolute value of alternating current flowing through a power line to the electrical unit, and a peak value current detector responsive to the peak value of the periodic signal on the power line. A comparator circuit receives outputs from both detectors, and provides an output signal when the ratio therebetween is in excess of a predetermined value, this condition only applying when the AC-DC converter is operative. The comparator may comprise a differential amplifier which periodically triggers a pulse generator to maintain a selected signal level and activate a relay as long as the selected proportionality exists between the peak and mean values of the AC power signal.
