A ventilating system for an outboard motor having a water propulsion device and an internal combustion engine positioned in a cowling, the engine having an output shaft arranged to drive the water propulsion device, is disclosed. The ventilating system includes an air inlet in the cowling which permits air to flow into an engine compartment in which the engine is positioned, and an exhaust port positioned in the cowling. The system also includes a mechanism for drawing air through the inlet into the compartment and expelling air out of the compartment through the exhaust port after the engine has stopped.

Ventilation system for outboard motor

An adjustable throttle damper retards closure of associated throttle valves. The throttle damper is positioned between runners of an intake manifold to which the throttle valves communicate. A lever selectively couples the throttle damper to a throttle linkage operating the throttle valves. This arrangement reduces the width of the engine. The throttle damper also operates against a lead throttle lever of the throttle linkage in order minimize the effect play in the linkage has on valve synchronization.

Throttle linkage mechanism

A marine propulsion system and particularly an outboard motor wherein the outboard motor is provided with a control for preventing engine damage in response to an abnormal condition by reducing the speed of the engine through disabling certain cylinders. The cylinders disabled are chosen on the vertical position of the cylinder in the engine so as to provide improved running and avoid undesirable results. In addition, the disabling of the cylinders is precluded until the abnormal condition has existed more than a predetermined time period upon initial start-up so as to permit unencumbered normal warm up of the engine.
