An information processing apparatus includes an encrypting unit that encrypts a value to be kept secret with a predetermined cipher key. The information processing apparatus includes a converting unit that converts, when the value to be kept secret is an initial value written at the time of initialization of a storage device in which a value encrypted by the encrypting unit is stored, the value encrypted by the encrypting unit into a value which is reversibly convertible and is independent of the cipher key used by the encrypting unit. The information processing apparatus includes a storing unit that stores the value converted by the converting unit in the storage device.

A drive preserves a default input password. When there is no password input from the user, the default input password is regarded as a user input password and is compared and collated with a password for access protection, thereby controlling the access protection. In this instance, if the default input password and the password for access protection have the same value, a collation coincidence is obtained. The drive permits the access without needing a password input of the user.

Storing apparatus and password control method

A data protection method is used for protecting data recorded on a removable storage medium, such as an optical magnetic disk. The method includes the steps of authorizing to read and access a part of a directory area on a storage medium without specifying a password given to the removable storage medium. When accessing the removable storage medium, a user is required to input a password, the inputted password is compared with a predetermined password, and if not coincident, access is inhibited, and further, if coincident, it is permitted to access only one part of an area of the removable storage medium.

Data protection method for a removable storage medium and a storage device using the same

Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for protecting data on a storage medium by encrypting the data to be recorded on the storage medium with a password. This method comprises a step of, generating, for changing key data on each memory unit by one password, the key data, thereafter encrypting the key data with the password and writing the encrypted data to the storage medium, and a step of encrypting the data with the key data and encrypted data to the storage medium. The method further comprises a step of reading the encrypted key data from the storage medium, a step of decoding the encrypted key data with the password, and a step of decoding the data on the storage medium with the decoded key data. The encryption is done by using the key data generated separately from the password, and it is therefore feasible to prevent the password from being analyzed by decoding a cipher text.

Storage medium and method and apparatus for separately protecting data in different areas of the storage medium

A storage apparatus includes a recording medium on which a coded password XW , generated by coding a password assigned to a user using a coding algorithm (one-way function) is recorded. A coding section produces a coded password XW by coding a password PW input by the user using the coding algorithm, and a checking section compares the coded passwords XW and XW . An access control section permits access to the recording medium when the checking section judges that the passwords XW and XW match, while barring access when the passwords XW and XW do not match.

A storage device is provided for gaining access to a storage medium and for reading data from or writing data to the storage medium. Access control method and storage device using same

In a storage apparatus, a recording medium has a first recording region and a second recording region. A command executor sets a first and second password in the first and second recording region respectively for performing access control so as to restrict unauthorized access to the recording medium by a third party. An access controller performs the access control on the basis of the first password and the second password. When initializing the recording medium, only the first recording region can be initialized. It is possible to effectively perform the access control on the recording medium all the time by an authorized user and to maintain the security.

A software copying system which enables copyrighted software recorded in a master storage medium to be copied to a user's target storage medium in a legitimate manner. A contents identifier reading unit reads out a software identifier from the master storage medium, while a storage medium identifier reading unit reads out a storage medium identifier from the target storage medium., The two identifiers are then sent to a central site which manages licenses for the right to copy software products. At the central site, a signature generating unit produces a first signature from those identifiers and sends it back to the user's site, where a signature writing unit writes the received signature into the target storage medium. A signature generating/comparing unit produces a second signature out of the same identifiers as those sent to the central site, and compares it with the first signature stored in the target storage medium. A data copying unit copies the subject software data file from the master storage medium to the target storage medium, only when the first and second signatures coincide with each other.

Software copying system

A file management system for a partially rewritable single storage medium increases a Rewritable Zone and an unrewritable Read Only Zone, where a desired number of files and pieces of medium management information, including management information for respective files, are written when the Read Only Zone is manufactured. The file management system comprises a reading device and a creating device. The reading device reads the medium management information written in the Read Only Zone upon commencing the use of the storage medium. The creating device creates, in the Rewritable Zone, file management information necessary for using the storage medium based on the medium management information read from the reading device, according to the usage status of the storage medium.
