A method for manufacturing a head stack assembly that includes a pair of suspensions each of which supports a head, an arm that drives the head, and a pair of base plates that attach the pair of suspensions to both sides of the arm that has a perforation hole, each of the pair of base plates having a boss with an opening includes the step of swaging the pair of base plates with the arm by passing, in one direction, a processing member larger than the opening through the perforation hole and the base plates while the pair of base plates are being inserted into the perforation hole at both sides of the perforation hole, wherein where a neutral plane is defined as a plane that halves a thickness of the arm and is perpendicular to a section that includes a center axis of the perforation hole, a first position is defined as a position that has a minimum internal diameter of the base plate, and a second position is defined as a position closest to the neutral plane among contact positions between the base plates and the arm, a distance between the neutral plane and the first position is equal to or smaller than a distance between the neutral plane and the second position before the swaging step.

An actuator for moving heads in a disk unit having heads for reading or writing data from or on recording surfaces of disks driven to rotate, an actuator having arms for supporting the heads, a main FPC board having one end thereof supported by the actuator and the other end thereof supported by a body of the disk unit, and relay FPC boards placed along the arms of the actuator, which can realize a compact and thin size, resistive to noise, and permitting a reduction in manufacturing cost. A printed-circuit board is supported by an actuator, is electrically connected to a circuit unit in a body of a disk unit via a main FPC board, and is electrically connected to heads via relay FPC boards. Integrated circuits are mounted on the printed-circuit board.

A breather filter unit for a magnetic disk drive including a base and a cover fixed to the base, the cover having a vent. The breather filter unit includes a casing fixed to an inner surface of the cover, the casing having a vent inlet communicating with the vent of the cover and a vent outlet communicating with an inside of the magnetic disk drive, and a first filter contained in the casing at a position adjacent to the vent inlet, the first filter being formed from a plurality of fibers extending in a direction substantially parallel to that of an air flow from the vent inlet to the vent outlet. The breather filter unit further includes a second filter bonded to the casing so as to cover the vent outlet, and an activated carbon layer contained in the casing at a position between the first filter and the second filter.

Breather filter unit for magnetic disk drive

A head actuator for a magnetic disk drive unit which eliminates the possibility of track slip due to a mechanical external force and allows high-speed access. The head actuator includes a carriage having a body provided rotatably to a shaft fixed to a housing and an arm fixed to the body so as to extend substantially perpendicularly to the shaft, a supporting member mounted on the body on its side opposite to the arm with respect to the shaft, and a coil fixed to the supporting member and receiving a driving force from a static magnetic field. The supporting member is formed of a material having a specific gravity larger than that of a material forming the body of the carriage.

Head actuator for magnetic disk drive unit

A magnetic disk device includes a flexible printed circuit board having a first portion provided with read/write ICs for read/write heads and first printed patterns connected to the read/write ICs and a second portion positioned within the first portion, an end of the second portion being connected to the first portion so as to be bendably projected from the first portion, the second portion being provided with a servo IC for the servo head and second printed patterns connected to the servo IC, the flexible printed circuit board being mounted on an actuator body such that one end of the first portion lies outside the actuator and the second portion lies on the actuator body. The magnetic disk device also includes first lead wires of the read/write heads extending to the flexible printed circuit board and being connected to the first patterns, and second lead wires of the servo head extending to the flexible printed circuit board and being connected to the second printed patterns. The first lead wires and the read/write ICs are on one side of an imaginary plane while the second wires and the servo IC are on an opposite side of the imaginary plane, the imaginary plane passing through the tip end of an arm structure and a shaft of the actuator body and being parallel to the shaft.
