A display method lets a display beam to propagate in a transparent substrate while internally reflected repeatedly and lets the display beam partly emit out of the transparent substrate every time the display beam is internally reflected, thereby emitting display beams from almost entirety of a surface of the transparent substrate. The display beam is produced holographically. A display apparatus includes a spatial phase modulator that produces a display beam, a transparent substrate in which the display beam is internally reflected repeatedly to propagate in it, and a splitter that lets the display beam partly emit out of the transparent substrate every time the display beam is internally reflected.

Display method and display apparatus

There is provided a practically useful display method that allows viewers to see in-focus images easily. The method includes the steps of providing a lens array including a plurality of lenses, providing display areas at least one of which corresponds to each of the plurality of lenses, displaying partial images of an original image in the display areas respectively, the partial images being different from one another but partially including a same image portion, forming a bundle of beams by beams respectively emergent from the plurality of lenses equivalently, forming virtual images of the respective partial images displayed in the respective display areas by the respective lenses, and forming a single virtual image by superposing the virtual images of the partial images displayed in the respective corresponding display areas formed by the plurality of lenses.

Video image data is converted into spatial frequency information using Fourier transformation. The spatial frequency information is provided to an information display unit. The spatial frequency information as a phase distribution is displayed on the information display unit, light is irradiated onto the information display unit using a light source, and the amount of light that is irradiated by the light source is adjusted based on the video image data. And diffraction light, which is irradiated by the light source and modulated as the spatial frequency information by the information display unit, is projected onto a projecting unit.

A spatial light modulator supported on a device substrate includes a plurality of light modulation elements to modulate a light emitted from a light source. The spatial light modulator and the device substrate further comprises a cyclic structure on a surface of the spatial light modulator and/or the device substrate for preventing a reflection of the incident light from the cyclic structure. In an exemplary embodiment the cyclic structure includes cyclic structural elements having a distance between two cyclic elements shorter than the wavelength of an incident light for preventing a reflection of the incident light from the cyclic structure.
