A liquid crystal display device includes a TFT substrate, a counter substrate, more than one columnar spacer formed on the counter substrate side, a step film of convex shape formed onto the TFT substrate side and arranged at a position facing the columnar spacer, and a liquid crystal sealed between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate, wherein a difference between a central coordinate of the step film and a central coordinate of the columnar spacer seen in a normal direction of a display surface of the liquid crystal display device varies with standard deviation &#x3c3; of no smaller than 3 &#x3bc;m in at least one direction within an appropriate range in a display area of the display surface.

A spherical spacer is used as a spacer member defining a gap, and is fixed to a color filter substrate. A concave portion coming in contact with a part of the spherical spacer is formed in a position in a TFT substrate, the position being opposite to the spherical spacer. The substrates are bonded with each other by engaging the spherical spacer and the concave portion with each other.

The first substrate includes a first surface and a second surface, on which a columnar spacer is formed. Manufacturing method of a liquid crystal display device using a photo resist having regions with different thicknesses, ashing, and reflow processing

An amorphous-silicon TFT (thin-film-transistor) in an LCD device has a larger channel length at both the edge portions of the channel of the TFT compared to the central portion of the channel by forming chamfers at the corners of the source and drain electrodes. The larger channel length at both the edge portions reduces the leakage current caused by the turned-around light incident onto the channel.

A liquid crystal display device includes a sealing member provided region of a line-extracting portionwhich is divided into three or more regions (three regions of a region A, a region B, and a region C) to suppress the unevenness attributable to the difference in the density of the outgoing linesreliably. In a manufacturing method of a color liquid crystal display device, a first conductive film is formed on a transparent insulating substrate to form a gate electrode and a gate bus line (first PR process). A gate insulating film, a semiconductor layer, an ohmic layer, and a second conductive film are deposited to form an island of a thin film transistor and a drain bus line (second PR process). Then, color filters in respective three colors are formed in their respective predetermined regions on the transparent insulating substrate in succession (third through fifth PR processes). A black matrix is formed, and a drain electrode and a source electrode are formed in the island by removing the second conductive film and ohmic layer on a region corresponding to the channel region by using the black matrix as a mask (sixth PR process). Then, a planarization film and a pixel electrode are formed (seventh and eighth PR processes).
