An exhaust gas purifying apparatus, which is intended to improve hydrocarbon purifying performance and simplify the after-treatment of adsorbed hydrocarbon, an in which a three way valve 51 is operated under the control of a controller 80 to cause a bypass exhaust gas passage 30 to be communicated with a main exhaust gas passage, so that hydrocarbon in exhaust gas is adsorbed onto an adsorption catalyst 40 when the temperature of a three way catalyst 20 in the main exhaust gas passage 13 is low. When the three way catalyst temperature increases, the bypass exhaust gas passage is shut off from the main exhaust gas passage by the three way valve and the adsorption catalyst is heated by a heater 60, so that the adsorbed hydrocarbon is oxidized at the adsorption catalyst to form a harmless substance.

Exhaust gas purifying apparatus

An apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine having an exhaust purifying catalytic device which absorbs nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust when the engine is in a lean-combustion mode and which deoxidizes the absorbed nitrogen oxides when the engine is in a rich-combustion mode. The engine control apparatus includes an electronic control unit for estimating the amount of purifying capability reducing substances other than nitrogen oxides, which decreases the nitrogen oxide adsorbing ability of the catalytic device, absorbed by the catalytic device, on the basis of the accumulated value of vehicle travel distance, fuel consumption of engine, or intake air amount. The control unit changes the operating condition of engine so that the exhaust gas temperature is increased when it is judged that the estimated adsorption amount has reached a predetermined adsorption amount. The exhaust purifying catalytic device is heated by high-temperature exhaust gas to remove the purifying capability reducing substances from the catalytic device.

Apparatus and method for internal combustion engine control

Described herein is a drive-by-wire vehicle engine output control system. The system permits good-response acceleration by a driver's simple and reasonable operation, i.e., by operating an accelerator pedal and also a prompt response even when a sudden load change occurs. Further, the system permits precise speed control by simple equipment even when the deviation of a vehicle speed from a target vehicle speed is large. Output changes of an engine can be controlled within a permissible output change range by (a) comparing a target autocruise engine output with an acceleration demanding ending output, choosing the larger engine output and then controlling the engine to give the larger engine output, (b) controlling the engine to achieve a target autocruise engine output obtained from a speed correction torque and a running load torque or (c) limiting an engine control quantity on the basis of a permissible output change value.

Drive-by-wire vehicle engine output control system

An engine output control apparatus is used on a vehicle having an engine driven by a drive-by-wire system and includes a device for setting a first target engine control amount in accordance with an amount of operation of a manually operated engine control member; a device for detecting wheel slippage and for setting a second target engine control amount at which wheel slippage is reduced when wheel slippage exceeds a predetermined value; a device for setting a third target engine control amount at which constant-speed running of the vehicle is maintained when a manually operated constant-speed control member is actuated; and a selecting device for selecting one of the first, second, and third target engine control amounts. The selection made by the selecting device is based upon a determination of whether wheel slippage has exceeded a predetermined value and whether the manually operated constant-speed control member has been actuated. A setting device is provided for setting the engine output control amount based upon the target engine control amount selected by the selecting device.

Engine output control apparatus

An engine exhaust emission control system, in which a valve is set at a hydrocarbon adsorbing position to guide exhaust emissions to a bypass line including an adsorbent sieve for adsorbing hydrocarbons during a initial period of engine start-up, and the valve is switched over to a hydrocarbon purging position to guide exhaust emissions to an exhaust line and to divert a part of the exhaust emissions to the bypass line.

An air fuel ratio detecting device which is improved in accuracy as compared to similar prior art devices comprises a sensor cell for developing an electrical signal in response to the difference between the concentration of oxygen within an exhaust gas and the concentration of oxygen within a reference gas, a controlling means for developing an electrical control signal having a polarity determined from the output of the sensor cell, a pump cell for moving oxygen ions in response to the electrical control signal received from the controlling means, a control current detecting means for detecting control current flow between the controlling means and the pump cell, an air fuel ratio detecting means for detecting an air fuel ratio from the control current flow, a stoichiometric air fuel ratio detecting means for detecting the direction of the control current flow so as to determine the stoichiometric air fuel ratio, a storage means for storing therein a linear air fuel ratio value which is determined from a predetermined functional relationship with respect to the magnitude of the control current flow, a linear air fuel ratio detecting means for detecting the magnitude of the control current flow detected by the control current detecting means so as to compare the same with the stored linear air fuel ratio value derived from the storage means, and a correcting means for correcting the predetermined functional relationship stored within the storage means when a stoichiometric air fuel ratio signal is developed from the stoichiometric air fuel ratio detecting means.

Air fuel ratio detecting device

An exhaust emission control system for a motor vehicle is disposed in an exhaust path, comprises a first catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas during activation of an engine, a second catalyst disposed downstream of the first catalyst and including a lean NOx catalyst, a bypass detouring the first catalyst, a select valve for controlling the amount of exhaust gas to be introduced into the bypass and first catalyst, and a control unit for controlling the select valve and flow of the exhaust gas according to operating status of the engine.

Exhaust emission control system

A parameter representing a real generation amount is detected and the intake is increased based on the detected parameter instead of on-information of the switch of the electric load. Therefor, the rotation speed in idling is stabilized without excess idle-up. The controllability is excellent due to the combination with controlling the load of the alternator itself.

Device for controlling change in idling

An air fuel ratio detecting device is disposed in an exhaust gas passage of an engine, and detects the oxygen concentration in exhaust gases to produce a signal indicative of the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine. The air-fuel ratio detecting device serves as a linear A/F sensor for detecting whether the air-fuel mixture is on a leaner or richer side of a stoichiometric ratio and for also detecting the value of the air-fuel ratio. An electric signal representative of the oxygen concentration in a detection chamber supplied with exhaust gases is applied by a sensor cell to a controller which then controls a pump cell to cause the oxygen concentration in the detection chamber to indicate a nearly stoichiometric ratio. The air-fuel ratio detecting device can continuously detect the air-fuel ratio with an electric control signal from the controller. The stoichiometric ratio is detected when the potential difference between the electrode of the pump cell jumps or varies discontinuously. Since the oxygen concentration difference directly serves as detected stoichiometric ratio information, the stoichiometric ratio can be detected with an increased response. The stoichiometric ratio may be detected, using a variable threshold value, based on the potential difference across the pump cell, and the threshold value is selected depending on a control parameter for fine adjustments of a target air-fuel ratio.

Air-fuel ratio detecting device

An air-fuel ratio control system compares an air-fuel ratio indicated by air-fuel ratio information from an air-fuel ratio sensor and a target air-fuel ratio determined depending on operating conditions of a motor vehicle which incorporates the air-fuel ratio control system, for reliably determining at least a failure of the air-fuel ratio sensor. When a failure of the air-fuel ratio sensor is detected, an air-fuel ratio feedback control process is stopped or the air-fuel ratio sensor is disabled, preventing the air-fuel ratio from being corrected in error based on an output signal from the air-fuel ratio sensor which has failed. Therefore, the air-fuel ratio control system prevents problems such as poor exhaust gas purification, reduced drivability, and unstable engine idling from taking place.

A method and apparatus for calculating a target torque of an engine in accordance with operation condition of a vehicle, calculating a target intake air amount per engine revolution cycle required to generate the target engine torque, calculating an opening of a sub throttle valve disposed in an intake path of the engine from an opening of a main throttle valve disposed in the intake path, of which an opening is controlled in accordance with an operation amount of an accelerator pedal, and the target intake air amount, or calculating an equivalent throttle opening assuming the main throttle valve and the sub throttle valve as an equivalent throttle valve in accordance with the target intake air amount, calculating the sub throttle valve opening by correcting the equivalent throttle opening with a correction coefficient determined by the relationship between the equivalent throttle opening and the main throttle valve opening, and on/off controlling the sub throttle valve in accordance with the calculated sub throttle valve opening.

An ignition timing controller is furnished for use in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine. The controller includes a device for setting the ignition timing of the engine in accordance with the state of operation of the engine and another device for actuating an ignition system on the basis of the ignition timing set by the ignition timing setting device. The ignition timing setting device is constructed of a device for estimating the wall temperature of a combustion chamber of the engine from a variable, which indicates the quantity of combustion energy of the engine, and another device for calculating the ignition timing from the wall temperature of the combustion chamber estimated by the wall temperature estimating device.

Ignition timing controller for spark-ignition internal combustion engine

A controlling system for a vehicle-carried internal combustion engine which prevents the rotational speed of the engine from rising excessively high even when an accelerator pedal is operated in a condition of a power transmitting system wherein it does not transmit the driving force of the engine from a transmission to a wheel of the vehicle whether the vehicle is in a stopping condition or in a driving condition. Such condition of the power transmitting system is detected by a driving force transmitting condition detector, and when such condition is detected, a controller controls a throttle valve of the engine so that the opening of the throttle valve may not exceed a predetermined throttle opening greater than an idling throttle opening irrespective of an operation amount of the accelerator pedal.

In an engine output control apparatus including an engine output control means for controlling the output of an engine, an electric motor for driving the means, and a motor control means for controlling the electric motor commensurate with the state of operation of an accelerator pedal, a method of controlling the output of the engine, comprising: obtaining an engine torque target (Te) commensurate with the state of operation of the accelerator pedal; calculating a target amount of engine control (.theta.t) based on the engine torque target (Te) and an engine speed (Ne); and controlling the engine output control means by the electric motor so as to meet with the target amount of engine control (.theta.t).

A slip value of a driving wheel is calculated on the basis of driving and driven wheel velocities detected by wheel velocity sensors, a target engine output of a vehicle is set in accordance with the slip value of the driving wheel, a target intake air amount to the engine is set in accordance with the target engine output, a target opening of a throttle valve is set based on the target intake air amount, an opening correction value of the throttle valve is calculated in accordance with a deviation between the target intake air amount and an actual intake air amount detected by an air flow sensor, the opening of the throttle valve is controlled to attain an opening as a sum of the target opening and the opening correction value when the air flow sensor is in a normal state, and the throttle valve opening is controlled to a basic target opening when a malfunction occurs in the air flow sensor, thereby achieving engine output control by a traction controller even when a malfunction occurs in the air flow sensor.
