An apparatus for insertion in an ear is provided in one example and includes a drug delivery device for insertion into an external auditory canal, wherein the drug delivery device contains one or more pharmaceutically active agents that can be released from the drug delivery device into the external auditory canal. In more particular instances, the drug delivery device can conform to the profile of the external auditory canal.

System and methods for treating ear disorders

A cleaning system configured to use a hydrogen peroxide solution to clean contact lenses. The cleaning system includes a reservoir to hold the cleaning solution and a complex base coupled to the reservoir to insure a hermetically closed reservoir environment. The complex base is separated into at least a first and a second segment. A lens holder assembly holds the lenses within the solution and is coupled to the complex base in the first segment. A motor is located in the second segment of the complex base to selectively introduce a catalyst to the cleaning solution. The cleaning system has additional features that permit the system to allow for the storage of the contact lenses by converting a neutralized cleaning solution into a storage solution to prevent recontamination.

Contact lens cleaning systems

Drug delivery devices, and methods of delivering pharmaceutically active agents to a target tissue within a body using such devices, are disclosed. One drug delivery device includes a body having an internal surface for disposing on a target tissue and a well having an opening to the internal surface. An inner core comprising a drug containing portion and an expandable material is disposed in the well.

Drug delivery device

An ophthalmic drug delivery device having a first end and a second end, an injection port, a reservoir, and a sleeve is disclosed. The injection port is for sealingly engaging a needle of a syringe, which is for providing a fluid comprising a pharmaceutically active agent. The reservoir is disposed within the device, is fluidly coupled to the injection port, and has an opening for communicating the fluid to an outer surface of a sclera of an eye. The sleeve is for engaging the device proximate overlapping portions of the first end and the second end for forming a generally ring-shaped three-dimensional geometry upon implantation of the device on the outer surface of the sclera. The device is useful for the treatment of a disease of the posterior segment of the eye.

Ophthalmic drug delivery device

An ophthalmic drug delivery device having a scleral surface, an orbital surface, an injection port on the orbital surface, and a fluid conducting passageway disposed within the device that is fluidily coupled to the injection port and terminates in an opening for communicating the fluid to an outer surface of the sclera is disclosed. The fluid contains a pharmaceutically active agent useful for the treatment of a disease of the posterior segment of the eye.

Drug delivery devices, and methods of delivering pharmaceutically active agents to a target tissue within a body using such devices, are disclosed. One drug delivery device includes a body having an internal surface for placement proximate a target tissue and a well having an opening to the internal surface. An inner core comprising a pharmaceutically active agent is disposed in the well.

The present invention is directed to a drug delivery device for a human eye. The human eye has a sclera, an inferior oblique muscle, and a macula. The device of the present invention includes a pharmaceutically active agent, and a geometry that facilitates the implantation of the device on an outer surface of the sclera, beneath the inferior oblique muscle, and with the pharmaceutically active agent disposed above the macula. Methods of delivery a pharmaceutically active agent to the posterior segment of the human eye are also disclosed.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for delivering a drug formulation to a human eye. The method includes the steps of inserting the apparatus below the Tenon's capsule and above the sclera at a point posterior to the limbus of the eye and injecting the drug formulation to form a drug depot on an outer surface of the sclera. The apparatus includes a cannula having a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a bend separating the distal portion and the proximal portion. The distal portion has a radius of curvature substantially equal to a radius of curvature of the globe of the eye. A tangent of the distal portion at the bend is disposed at an angle no more than about 56 degrees with respect to the proximal portion.

Sub-tenon drug delivery

A remotely operable intraocular surgical instrument specially adapted to perform anterior capsulectomy/capsulorhexis for extracapsular cataract extractions and emulsifications is disclosed. The intraocular instrument has a main body portion including at least two internally defined passageways and a rounded internal chamber including a rotatable wheel or a gear. An arm of variable length including a knife is associated with the rotatable wheel or gear such that movement of the wheel/gear rotates the knife through 360 degrees. In one embodiment, the wheel is driven through the use of a fluid forced through the internal passageways and around the wheel. In another embodiment a shaft having specialized teeth communicates pressure applied to a handle to the gear, thus turning the associated knife. Both embodiments include a releasable stop to prevent the knife from rotating and cutting past 360 degrees. Both embodiments also include structure for providing a viscoelastic solution to the operative field and an optional passageway to remove undesired material from the operative field. The lack of movement of the main body portion of the instrument during the procedure, simplicity of design, relative low expense of manufacture and disposable nature of the instrument provide obvious advantages and benefits.
